09/10 School budget adopted

The BOE met tonight to adopt the school budget. I understand the school bus contract came back with a low bid having increases of 12% in the first year and 4% each of the subsequent four years. By comparison, the contract related to the previously rejected bid waiver request offered cost increases in the range of 5% in the first year and 4% each subsequent year.

Did any of you attend the meeting? Any comments?

According to Florio, the transportation contract will result in an extra $150,000 to $200,000. The boe was not happy about it. They, or I should say a couple board members, also spoke of their disappointment in the fact that there have been no concessions from any of the unions. Mr. Sobol was the only boe member voting against the budget and spoke of the many difficulties facing Cheshire residents and businesses. Mr. Dixon had nothing to say but voted in favor of the budget.

I thank Alan Sobol for acknowledging we don't live in Oz... even though Cheshire's Political Class likes telling the little people "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!"

So by putting out the transportation contract to bid we will be paying $200,000 more than if the Town Council had allowed the BOE to work with Dattco? Another great example of leadership.

Did Datco promise a lower increase if they could work it out with Florio? If Florio is such a great negotiator- where are the concessions from the teachers?

It is hard to believe that there were only 2 bidders. Who reviews town bid packages before they are allowed to go out?
