Brittingham on drug & alcohol survey

The NHRs Luther Turmelle is reporting on the Town's recent survey on the use of drugs & alcohol by CHS and Dodd students. In particular, the article focuses on BOE member Gerry Brittingham and his frustration with the handling of the survey:

Problems associated with administering a survey of high school and middle school students about their attitudes toward alcohol, drug abuse and smoking made for some tense moments at a Board of Education meeting... “I can’t begin to quantify my level of frustration at how this happened,” Brittingham said at Thursday’s meeting, claiming that officials at the high school “bungled” the survey process.

Jerry brought up a very good point about the difference in the manner the survey was administered between Dodd and the High School. hearing members of the Board and the Supt reply to his comments it is obvious the Supt, Admin and some board members just want to bury their heads in the sand about the huge drug and alcohol problem we have in our wonderful little community.

how do we know we have a problem? the survey can't tell us if it wasn't administered properly.

Dodd has over 800 students and only 200 surveys were done. CHS has over 1600 students and ONLY 325 surveys were returned. There will be no accurate results, but then again, maybe that's just the way they want it.

It was also pointed out at the BOE meeting that during that water main break, narcotics were found in a stairway.
Talk to the kids that go to the high school - they'll tell you all about the drugs in that school.

Go to a football game and look at the students behavior. If they aren't drunk then they all have the same stomach bug. Parents drink in the parking lot before the games, there is booze served at the Aqua Turf to parents during the football banquet. Shall I go on? The parents are the largest contributor to the problem. The School admin buries their heads in the sand, they don't want to admit the problem.

A few years back the captain of the football team hosted a party. All the players and coaches were there. The kegs were in the basement and everyone knew it. The problem isn't going away.

I've heard that when students are found to be drunk at school during class, the administration just phones there parents and tells them to come pick them up.
Shouldn't it be the police that come and take the kid out of class and the police would call the parents to have them pick them up at the police department. 10-9's should be given for every offense.

Does anyone know how strict the administration is?

Most drug surveys don't cover that large a percentage of the population. You can always ask a statistics expert who understands surveys. Contact survey.com and ask them

They don't even follow the C minus rule for sports....how will they get this right?

This(D&A) problem resolution must start at home with the parents. They must be held accountable for some of this. If I was ever caught doing anything wrong I would rather face the police than my parents. These kids have to begin to grow up and not have everything handed to them.
