Sup't may forgo a payraise

From the NHRs Luther Turmelle:

Faced with the prospect of starting the 2009-2010 school year with fewer teachers than the district has now, Superintendent of Schools Greg Florio said Friday he is not expecting a salary increase when his job comes up for review next summer.

Florio said that while he hasn’t spoken formally with the Board of Education about forgoing a raise next year, “in this climate it would be very difficult to justify.”

I think maybe the Super ought to immediately reopen the teacher's contract to defer some of the salary increases in '09 to the out years.

Maybe we ought to have been more concerned about protecting the jobs of teachers, not padding the paychecks of the lucky ones who will avoid being laid off.

Didn't the article say "he's not expecting a raise"? That doesn't mean the board won't suggest one for him. The super ought to give back his last raise, forego the added pension contribution, give up the car allowance, reopen the teachers' contract, should not replace Calaluce with 2 people as he's suggested, don't replace Gallagher - just let the vp's at CHS collectively run the place, bury the turf project and request to redistribute the money to necessary repairs, cancel all catered events (no more holiday dinners before breaks or cookouts, etc), reduce the coaching staff, skip all employee gifts (mugs, plaques, pens, and all that other junk)institute pay to play, and put the parking fee back in.
These are just some suggestions - and come to think of it, none of them directly impact the students.

Does anyone remember the outrage from the 5 Dems on town council this fall when the 4 Republicans suggested the town manager receive a 2.5% increase instead of the "market rate" 3.5%? The outpouring of praise for the TM was dripping...and that was okay as good management should be acknowlegded but those folks missed the point. The R's weren't reprimanding the TM they were counciling caution as difficult times were already upon us especially with more town employee contract negotiations looming.

That vote went down to another defeat for fiscal responsibility.

I think Dr. Florio's even contemplating a zero increase shows a measure of responsibility. He is afterall very happy to be a member of the "public" sector. And staying there does require effort in good times and even greater effort in bad times.

If I recall, the super was hired back in 2004 at $109,000. His current salary is $142,868. That's over a 30% increase in pay in just over 4 years. How many people get those kind of increases? I also believe he makes more than many surrounding larger districts that have way more issues than this district has.
So he's not expecting a raise?? No big sacrafice - he shouldn't get one!

I'm sure the superintendent has the 09-10 budget finalized. I hope he had the sense to have that bottom line number be no greater than it was for 08-09 - in other words - NO increase. It will, afterall, be the FIRST time there was a zero percent increase in any of his proposals.

The BOE budget has ALWAYS increased; even in that year that everyone thinks was a 0% increase; there was NO 0%; the BOE got $234,000 that year.

I wonder how many of you anonymous writers will show up at the work shops or speak at the public hearings

What does Florio really do?

It shouldn't be that hard to find another superintendent fo $100,000 or less.

Why does he need such a large staff?

The only decreases we've at in education is the student population.
With his performance, he would not last in the private sector and if he were fortunate enough to get a job in the private sector, he won't make over $90,000 with no car allowance, he would have to contribute to his medical, he would not have a contract and any other benefits would be non-existent of greatly reduced.

The simple solution...the ONLY solution...get rid of the democrat majority on the BoE and Town Council. If not, the whole town will be made up of rich, liberal, elitist, whining, yuppie XXXX.

Although I don't feel he should get a raise, I would be very careful about questioning what someone really does. Unless you have experience in this field and fully understand the job and role of a school superindendent, I don't think anyone should question ones work.
How would you feel if soeone asked what you did and if you are really worth what you get paid.
I am not saying that he has done a great job...there are a number of issues going on in the schools that need to be addressed, but it isn't fair to question his work that way.
I work in the private sector and I would never tolerate anyone asking me what I do unless they have sat in my seat.

Will you?
Sounds like you may be one of them??

I am not one of them. I have written more letters than anyone in town and have attended all workshops. Anonymous messages mean nothing.Step up to the plate and make your feelings known.

Well, not all of use have the luxury of free time in the evenings. If you or your spouse work a night shift---and have a school age child, you are unable to participate.

So the people whom you demean by this comment--working couples with school age children---tend to be the ones most directly impacted by tax hikes and budget cuts.

Go back to Marty Coburn's charm school, will ya?

Anon 11:00. You are right that people work at night etc. If you have input you can write to your district Town Council rep and hve them read into public record. This might help.

You are absolutely correct. However with 28000 residents it seems strange that only 5or6 show up at the public hearing on the budget. This is held once a year at 7:30. The ball is in your court as this mess will be inherited by the next generation -my grandchildren included. MM has lots of extra money he can use this year so stay tuned we will see what happens.
