Open forum 5/5

The Council went on a tour of the collapsing aqueduct this morning. It's a really beautiful piece of engineering with, essentially, two rivers... one running perpendicular to the other... they just happen to be separated by a 40' vertical. It's really amazing to see the "highways" of the early 1800s. Sorry, no photos... I still need to buy some equipment for that.

I began thumbing through the pool consultant report. I read the executive summary (which breaks the report into five analyses) and, in particular, the fifth analysis... which covered the concept of a permanent structure. My initial thought... huh? The report really didn't even make much sense to me, for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the report right now, so I can't offer anymore. Whenever I can find it though, I'll scan a few pages and post them here. That way you can make your own judgement.

While CL&P is proposing to drop their rates by 5% for the second half of '07, gas prices have steadily risen (AP) to $3 nationwide.

Gov. Rell continues to use the budget negotiation process to fight for a cap on property taxes (AP).

I found this web site that has historical information about Connecticut's roads and highways. One intereting item was a plan in the 1960s to make route 10 an expressway to New Haven.

Ther are many great photos regarding the arch. Check the Historical Society and Cheshire Herald. Post them. This area is greater in engineering importance than Lock 12. What a Gem.

The pool is going to keep costing the taxpayers $400,000 to $500,00 a year until we build a permanent structure over it. It will cost about $5 million as I mention before. Save time reading the report unless you have nothing better to do. If we could get a good rate because of our excellent rating we might spend less than the $400,00 per year. In the end we will come out ahead. Now it's like renting vs buying. We must bite the bullet and put this fiasco behind us.

Why has the Town started to repair the damage to the arch on the land in the North End? This is private land, owned by Calcagni, Bowman etc. Since when does the Town perform "emergency repair" to private land. This work allows the wetlands to be drained, making passage of the development easier. Since when does Public Works have so much extra time and labor on their hands, what is not getting done? Who did the engineering work for the repair? Milone & McBroom?

Anonymous said...

The town must do the repairs or the state will fine or santion us/
We can try to recover the costs later so the town has no choice

Who will do the work that taxpayers will pay for. Diversified Builders? For taxpayers to pay for it doesn't make sense. Whether town, state or federal, we are still the taxpayers. Now it's the Democrats that support welfare for the the rich.

Why didn't we rush to fix the barite mine cave in? What's the difference?

Anonymous said...

When the DEP says fix it we must. If they say fix the mines we must. They did not say fix the mines.

Anonymous said...

Marty Coburn wanted a small neighborhood to take on the responsibility of dam maintainance, maybe this is his example of "progressive politics"

Anonymous said...

The town should use "emminent domain" and take over this land. They safety and well being of the citizens of Cheshire and Southington are in danger. Isn't this why the DEP has stepped in? This is a flood plain and a great historical site.

Anonymous said...

Our state rep's where on top of the mines. Where are they now?Campaign contributions?

If the pool costs $4,000,000 to fix just continue to pay the $416,000 a year we have paid as a subsidy until the bill is paid off. At least it will not take 20 years to pay off on a bond issue.

I went along with the visit to see how they where going to bypass the culvert. Interesting - many thousands of cubic ft. of soil to be removed as they must cross the berm. Unfortunately they did not continue the tour on the east side of the river where the maul will be built. Shame on Milone. None of the town council has visited the sight yet the Dem. voted for it. Tim White still thinks it is a great idea and states that he is an enviromentalist. Ha Ha Take a look at the sight for the Mall and no person interested in the enviroment would put a mall with all the run off next to the 10 mile river. Hyprocisy prevails on the town council. Interested citizens should be allowed the opportunity to visit the sight. I am sure that if you do take the time visit you will be very surprised at what you see. This is not a flat meadow with a brook running thru it. The picture in the Cheshire Herald and the sight do not mix. Make the visit and judge for yourself

So you suggest we turn property at the corner of two busy highways into a nature preserve

Anonymous said...

Anon 2:31 What?

Anonymous said...

anon 4:31 It will not be as busy as the proposal.

Bob were you on the property to see what the town was spending money on or to take a tour. Not shame on Milone he only to take the council to where the damage is not for a hike on the property.

man when this new north end comes in It is going to be Super!!!
It will have everything I want and I know the council wants it the PZ wants it the eco dev want it and the people want it!!

I agree. I called the PZC to ask if that was possible last Friday. In fact, I asked how I could get in touch with the owners to request permission to walk through and photograph there. Instead of telling me who owned the property they recommended that I call WS Development's attorney and passed along the number.

Is it normal to walk property before it is developed?

If you go up to Canton you will see how WS did a wonderful job of tying the river into the project so take it easy the boys from WS can get it done. You will see that they can do the same with the Cheshire project. And that flyer-is that the best ya got?
Most of the people I know just tear them down and use them for spare toliet paper.

Anonymous said...

The flyer is the best because it tells the truth. Keep using smoke and mirrors to cover the lies. There are plenty of them. Whoever you are, why are you worried if you got everybody in your back pocket? Are you afraid of the truth. It always prevails.

Anon 11:23 Go to Town hall. Go with someone. Records are public. Planning and Zoning has a map of the property. Town assesors and Town clerk office should help you out. Good luck. Bring sone cash they charge for copies.

And what is the truth?

On May 7 the pro north end were way better prepared and kicked butt all night long.
see ya later old timer

Anonymous said...

They all said the same thing all night. How nice the stores would be. What stores? This whole thing is about residential. What fools. If they were made to comment on the subject at hand their total would be ZERO. Have a good night. The meeting was worthless by the way. More BS from W/S.

good night for the WS boys
Look out old timer it is gonna happen
Gong=your time is over
bing-here we go
ding ding get on the bus
The boys from WS are gonna drive you in

You have no marketing skills. The more you say they "BOYS" (which you are) the more people get turned off. More and more people know who the " BOYS" are and they are getting turned off to the proposal. Keep up your great work.

Matt Bowman, we heard that after the last PZ meeting you were so happy to show your buddies the handful of flyers you personally tore down. Don't you have enything better to do? You must be desperate to be looking for toilet paper. Enjoy, they are printed on quality paper. Only the best for you and your friends. How are the W/S brochures working out?
