Council agenda 7/8

Hip, hip, hurray! Hip, hip, hurray! Hip, hip, hurray!

The turf is finally here!

I'm so excited!

Turf-champion Matt Altieri and his fellow Democrats have finally placed the turf on the agenda. That's right... the $525,000 of pork... no. slush... no. discetionary funds are on the agenda! Yippee!

Thankfully, we're not going to be wasting this $525,000 on frivolous items... such as a permanent structure for the pool... something that would have an indirect impact on our need for middle east oil. Yeah... thankfully we're using the money for our "top priority."

This should be very interesting.
I wonder how much more expensive the turf is now since everything else seems to be going up due to gas and energy costs.
This is not what we need to be doing, especially in a time of recession.
We cannot allow this council to spend or should I say waste any more of out tax money on things like this while we have a huge white elephant sitting directly across the street from the high school.
Let Altieri support his family in another way.

Turf is good for you and good for me. You will take the turf and you will like it.
End of discussion.

The town council hopefully has learned just how difficult it is to build play things for the town's players with the ongoing, multigenerational public pool debacle. With that in mind one can only speculate just what might happen if our council decides to replace that stalwart of playing field surfaces, natural grass which almost resembles a type of really robust weed in its tenacity to grow and multiply, with a concoction of expensive ground up tire trash colored bright green.

Before the council tackles yet another special interest project requiring large outlays of cash into the future how about you fix up some of your recent messes first, like the ridiculous pool heating bill, the expensive high school electric heat, the lack of a 21st century post office etc etc.

With the dems holding the majority, and if all of them are allowed to vote (Ecke & Altieri should NOT vote because of their conflict of interest) then it's a done deal no matter who gets up there to complain.

Whatever happened to the "turf study group"? What a joke that is. And will anyone admit to who actually gave the 10K for the study. Take a wild guess!

The dems will probably tell everyone that the balance of funds will be raised through fundraisers and that maintenance will cost less than the grass field. They'll tell you there's no danger to all the chemicals in the turf etc.

They're gonna approve this toxic turf no matter what anyone says because that's their plan from the start.

If Esty votes yes then it is obvious both she and her well paid husband are both frauds when it comes to environmental issues. Artificial turf has to be the least "green" thing we could do as a town

to matt: a whipping is good for you and me. You will take a whipping and you WILL LIKE IT.

If Altieri is going to claim a savings in maintenance costs, then I wonder if he'll say how many of the school's maintenance workers will be laid off. If he won't admit to needing less maintenance workers then he shouldn't claim any savings.
In all probability, we're likely to spend more to maintain the turf. The machines to rake over the field, the large amounts of water to cool the high temps of the field, the chemicals needed to disinfect the field after every use, the expenses of using professionals for painting, repairing, etc. Oh and don't forget the replacement costs after 8 to 10 years.

"don't forget the replacement costs after 8 to 10 years."

Are we going to set aside $60K/ year as a down payment on turf replacement or is the plan to be fiscally irresponsible and screw future taxpayers?

I strongly encourage you (and everyone) to attend Tuesday's meeting to voice your concerns. I'm confident there will be many people speaking in support of the turf.

And to a previous commenter... it's unfair to ascribe the views of an elected official to those of a spouse.

It is already been decided and the way it was written on the agenda we know the outcome. Ecke & Alteri must recuse themselves for reasons beyond a doubt of conflict of interest. If they choose not to, the message they send along with the other Democrats is very clear; we do not care what the public thinks, we will do whatever we feel required to keep buying votes. This entire idea and the way it has been driven to this point is sickening.

Voicing your concerns at a meeting is like talking to the wall. Instead of that and complaining on this site, what needs to happen is that people need to organize on a bigger scale, picket Town Hall outside the night of the meeting, get media attention and then you might see some change. When Cheshire is perceived to have a problem, open to all who watch the news (and we all know Cheshire has no problems of any kind, a utopia if you will), the powers that be will need to stop rubberstamping and listen. Until there is pressure, it will be business as usual!

Well, if either Esty is an "environmentalist" they ought to scream bloody murder about sending our kids out to play on a pile of recycled hydrocarbon waste

Vote them out in our next election. The majority is not looking out for the future of Cheshire period. Look at the BOE budget now there is $480,000 over in the teachers salary and they didn't know at buget time. Who are they kidding? The Cheshire citizens that who. Wake up people!! There is alot going on here pay attention...

Regarding setting aside money for replacement - The superintendent is going to try to convince you that the rental fees charged for use of the field and maintenance savings will be set aside for replacement.
Only problem is how can he guarantee what if any rental income would be generated? And his numbers for maintenance savings (if there even would be any savings) are only wild guesses too.
When they say many more events will take place on the field, I wonder what the neighboring Elmwood Drive residents think about that. Or has anyone even bothered to ask them?

Tim, I think you should email Milone and tell him to have a representative from EHHI (Environment & Human Health, Inc.) from North Haven at the meeting too. They can provide honest information about the cancerous toxins in turf...something that the superintendent and some council members won't even want to talk about.

"Cancerous toxins"

Think this guy ought to pipe up unless the DTC has a gag order against him and the Mrs.
