Wetland approval given

According to Lauresha Xhihani (WRA), Inland Wetlands approve the proposed ND last night with a 5-0 vote.

As for me, I hope the PZC sees this project for what it is... unnecessary sprawl... and rejects the proposed project until a higher density proposal... with more serious consideration given to it's sustainability... is brought to the table.

So Tim you want a "...higher density proposal?"

So now you want the P&Z to say no. You had a chance when the Council discussed the matter and you supported it. A higher density proposal is not better than any other. Development of this land for commercial use other than a golf course or recreation is a waste of of the land and destruction of perfectly good wooded land.

You do know that this land was Cheshire's unoffical dump for the last 100 years.

This land is barren. When people coem to vist us, and we drive by they ask "whats the deal with all the vacant land with the real estate signs?" I tell them its where they propose to build a retail center like the one in Canton, but townspeople are upset about runnig the nature and aestetics? The typical response "Huh....what aesthetics, its a vacant piece of land, it doesnt look like much and neither does Route 10" The only people who see some fabulous place are those who have their heads int he sand....Cheshire is an average community with below average parks and recs, below average entertainment, above average schools (but poor facilities), What exactly do you people think is so special. Its this holier than though attitude which is why my family is planning on leaving and not a moment too soon

Cheshire as a Town really has very little value. The schools are over rated, along with the school administration and their refusal to admit there are alcohol and drug problems. There is no real leadership in government and too much behind the scenes collaboration with the developers. Money is driving the future development and what we do have left will soon be gone. Cheshire has a reputation of being snobbish and stuck up, a well deserved one. We think we are so good but in fact we are laughing material for many others. The driving motivation in Cheshire is the ill conceived notion of entitlement. We are not entitled to anything and we should not increase the taxes because we think we need a turf field, more ballfields, expanded athletics, better firetrucks. With upcoming recession and financial hardships there will be a rude awakening. When your gas goes to $4.50 a gallon along with heating oil and electricity hits .25 per kwhr, maybe then some small amount of sanity will sink in.

There is no possible way that the WPCA will allow this project. It makes no sense, they will kill it as they should.

TRANSLATION:
Ignore the facts that our currently great schools and services will be overwhelmed, that traffic will become a nightmare, and that taxes will skyrocket.

Ignore these "negative" realities. Take happy drugs and be "positive".

anon 1:45 You have to see the big pond. It's like another world. I'm not saying buy and preserve it but it isn't barren. What you see from RT10 and 691 is the surrounding area that was disturbed by the 691 project. Sorry you have not seen it.
"As far as being a dump for 100 years". If you call cows doing their businees a dump well you might be right because there were many cows on that land at least 60 years ago. After that it was not maintained by its owners and thus a dump for some.

So Tim you want a "...higher density proposal?"

My comments a year ago had the same intent.

Picture it this way... if the proposal is a footprint of 639,000 sq ft, how about a footprint of 63,900 sq ft and ten stories high... with a conservation easement on the rest of the land?

It's not surprising that they approved it. The developers have run this town for years. 2007 is the greatest year for them. It points out that there really is no zoning in Cheshire. All one has to do is request a zone change and it's done. It's time to get the developers out of our town government.

As for higher density, the developers would love that. If 10 story buildings were allowed in the N/E, they would then appear in the center of town, and they would not set aside anything for conservation as greed is more powerful than any thoughts of protecting the environment or preserving the character of Cheshire as a residential town. the town.

We should form a group called CUAM pronounced "Quom" that is Citizens United Against the Mall.
We need to take donations and rally every night on the green to let these developers know we don't want them.
Let it begin

I hope I see you tonight?

The latest petition presented by Justin Adinolfi, besides proving there is little support for the W/S mall says " a residential component targeting "EMPTY NESTERS".

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that this complex will not attract empty nesters. As long as it is not age resticted and children are allowed, empty nesters will go elsewhere. All the developers know that. What they want to do is to sell the school system for profit to young families that want a good school system for their children and everyone can understand that.

Yesterday, I met an empty nester who recently moved out of Quarry Village and into an age restricted condominium complex. He said there were too many children in the Quarry Village complex.

Did you guys read the article in Sunday;s Record Journal. Our fine Director of the Chamber of Commerce agrees that Cheshire businesses are having difficulty hiring workers. Small business and restaurants cannot fine good, qualified help. Seems coffee houses in Avon are paying $15 to start. The Director wants to increase public transportation to the Town from the surrounding towns to help bring in help. Makes you wonder how he can support the Mall project.

"Our fine Director of the Chamber of Commerce agrees that Cheshire businesses are having difficulty hiring workers."

Sure he and the Economic Development Coordinator, Gerald Sitko agree it's a problem. They also are aware of the many other problems facing our businesses; the horrendous traffic congestion on route 10; the lack of available commercial space for businesses to expand on; the reliability of electric power, and many other infrastructure problems. They talk about the problems, but instead of actions to solve these problems, they go out of their way to support the mall which will only exacerbate the problems.

The sad thing is that they are not alone. Too many elected officials are also aware of the problems the mall will create, yet they also enthusiastically support it. Too many don't really care about our local businesses. So what if some don't survive or go somewhere else.

We need people that do more than talk and who really care about our businesses and our town.

They're selling the school system. Not W/S, but our in-town developers. They make hay and we pay."

They sure are and the reason for it is because the percent of students in Cheshire that meet state mastery levels are so much higher than adjacent towns.

Comparing town rankings of 117 high schools in Connecticut one finds.

Cheshire 20th
Wallingford 67th
Meriden 108th
Waterbury 113th

What town would you choose your kids to go to?

That's why there will be hundreds of students in the Northend. There most likely will be 160 rental units and no condos in the W/S proposal. Condos are not selling, but it is easy to rent. Then when the other 300 acres are developed there will be 300 or more units. In total, expect to build classrooms for 400 or more students.
