Senior tax freeze renewal

A senior tax freeze --- once a controversial idea in this town --- has been making its way to the Town Council and hardly piquing the interest of anyone in town. That's in sharp contrast to what happened more than a year ago when a group made up mostly of seniors collected more than 3,000 signatures trying to force a referendum on a plan to freeze taxes on senior citizens. When they were not allowed to put their question on the ballot, more than 100 angry seniors showed up at Town Council meetings asking for a freeze. (WRA)

There is no reason for this not to be extended. This was opposed initially based on the fact that it would be put on the backs of other taxpayers. When all was said and done it cost the town less than projected and only 250 seniors qualified. This program helps Cheshire seniors most in need. I urge the Town Council to once again support our seniors.

The measure was approved for two years until 2009. There is no reason, within common sense, to repeal the decision, that would political suicide on the part of those that vote no. With 8 mil in the rainy day fund that must be paid back if we use wanting to beautify West Main, considering the idea of turf and not wanting to fix the pool, maybe the Council in their wisdom will repeal the senior deal this year.
