Tonight, I went to Toyo Sushi for the first time (in the shopping plaza between the Herald and the southend firehouse). I thought it was excellent and very reasonably priced... as you can see by the menu below, rolls go for $4-9. Also... I don't think I've ever mentioned the Yellow Fin restaurant (in the old Callahan's). I've been there a few times now and always like it. The owners at both places are very friendly. I'd recommend either one... although I'm no connaisseur of haute cuisine... I just know if something tastes good.

I miss the restaurants where real people like me could order affordable food we liked.
I fear we are becoming another yuppified Westport.(evidenly Tim likes that I suppose) Unless the NED turns us into another Waterbury
anon 11:44...besides the fact that Tim wrote the food was affordable and he liked it, you think Tim wants to turn Cheshire into both Westport and Waterbury....next you'll say that Tim is no good because he wants to both increase taxes and cut taxes. You make no sense! Apparently you are looking for reasons to put Tim down.

the predecessors to Toyo and Yellowfins worked for me, but Irish bars and Greek diners are like so blue collar these days
Plainer food like Damon's, Seafarer, or that Chinese place that was in the same south-end shopping center? All gone; for whatever reasons, they closed. Other dining options come along, and the good ones will stick around, the lame ones will not. Hey, Damon's is still an empty shell, yes? Why not open the sort of place you want to patronize? Demonstrate that free-market goodness.
The restaurant industry has the highest business turnover rate in the land. Toyo and Yellowfin and whatever else will, someday, also be gone. Enjoy them while they're here.
The listed prices at Toyo are not at all unusual. I've eaten sushi in many places, and those prices are spot-on. (And sushi, as a cuisine, is long past gourmet/boutique status. The really expensive stuff is still out there, but it's become an everyday dining option. And it's really good, yummy food. Eat. Enjoy.)

Maybe after we spend $2M on putting pretty bricks near the tire shop on West Main it will turn into a latte cafe and we can all drive to the next town for an emissions test

The restaurants you are talking about closed because they were not right for Cheshire.
"Irish Bar" - not family friendly, not enough drinkers in town to keep it going, couldn't take your family in there for a meal. In case you don't know, most people in Cheshire have children, and most take them with them wherever they go.
"Greek Diner" (Leo's??) $15 for a salad or sandwich at lunch was too much for the average Cheshire resident. People here do not spend $15 per person for lunch on a weekday, in general. I think even the breakfast was about $8.00
Kabob House (in the space before Toyo Sushi). $25-30 for a skewer of meat and vegetables on a plate with some rice......for a family of 4 you were talking over $100 with just a few soft drinks -- not smart business, there was no need for that kind of pricing and if the place had been reasonable they would have made a go of it. Word got around FAST.
Damon's - probably not a problem with the Cheshire location, the chain is based in Massachusetts and was having problems.
Now, how do you know you wouldn't like sushi? Have you ever tried it? Also, not all the food at the new restaurant is sushi, they also offer cooked meals and soups. I think the prices are VERY reasonable. $10-13 for a dinner (soup, salad and entree) is good in this economy, remember that a value meal at McDonald's is now over $6.00
"Real people" are open to new experiences and cuisines. You may like Japanese food, give it a try! I used to think Indian food would be terrible, and I couldn't believe it when I tried it -- I could eat it for every meal now, it's the best. Remember, Americans once thought that Italian and Chinese food were "foreign" -- now could you imagine our culture without them?
Gotta go -- have to call in my order to West Main China Dragon
I really miss the old Seafarer. The food was great, you could bring your children and still make your mortgage payment. We really need another restaurant like the Seafarer.
