So many "Dunkin'"
Many people have asked me...
Why does Cheshire have so many Dunkin Donuts'? (we have three, right?)
Today's WRA seems to answer that question while perhaps addressing other concerns related to the ND:
Tim WhiteNational retail experts say chain stores like McDonald's, Quiznos Sub and Sleepy's open stores in a suitable market and, if it fares well enough, opt to launch more. Spokesmen for several well-known chains say they do a thorough market analysis involving a review of an area's foot and vehicle traffic, surrounding businesses and residences, and population figures. "There's no really one specific answer," said Randy Hargrove, a Blockbuster spokesman. "It's a matter of looking at the market, where we need to be and where are the people." (by Chris Parker)
Torrington (with six Dunkin Donuts), population 36,000, isn't alone in duplicated chain businesses. Naugatuck, with 35,000 people, has five Dunkin' Donuts; Waterbury (110,000 residents) has 15. Torrington has four Subway restaurants; Naugatuck, two, and Waterbury, seven. But in Torrington, residents still take note of the developing sprawl of chain stores. In the past decade, there have been occasional calls for the Planning and Zoning Commission to put a stop to the influx of repeat stores because it limits choices. But City Planner Martin J. Connor said municipal leaders aren't allowed to discriminate based on brand name or business type.
"If it's a permitted use and they meet all the regulations, it should be permitted," he said. "The marketplace will dictate what the actual need is."

It will be nice to have a Dunkin at the new mall. If we're out that way, it would save us from driving back to town.
