Walmart swings again

Walmart continues swinging for the fences in a bid to rebuild their public image. First it was $4 prescriptions. Now they announce their intention to push energy efficient light bulbs (NYTimes). Initially Walmart got resistance from some small suppliers, such as... GE. But when Walmart makes a decision, they pretty much do what they want.

The article makes it clear that this is by no means a slam dunk. One reason is that many energy efficient light bulbs contain mercury. Another reason is general consumer resistance to the often bigger bulbs. (I found that out the hard way.)

There are not many easy answers to the problems in the world, but at least Walmart seems to be making an effort to take action.
