Town business survey

The MRJ is reporting on the town's just completed business survey (by Leslie Hutchison).

Results from the town's first online survey of businesses show quality of life is a key reason that companies have chosen to locate (here).... One of the more unexpected responses concerns high-speed Internet connections, with 84 percent of survey-takers calling it important for their business.

The Mall Boys, aka Cheshire Pavers, will screw up two of the main reasons companies locate here.

Quality of life will be seriously affected by turning rt 10 into another Queens St.

Access to highways will be access to traffic jams.

Thank the Boys, W/S and all the people who push this on Cheshire.

But, will the quality of life of those cashing us in be hit all that hard? Will they even stick around?

Of course, I don't blame the outside interests for doing their job and it's wrong to expect the local sellers to really put the town first. What bothers me, is that the system, thus far, has allowed them to pull it off unchecked.

It's our town. We collectively are the town government. It's just us and the reps we elect. How did we let it get this far?

hmmm. I just found this Vernon site. Very interesting http://www.smartgrowthforvernon.org/index.html

After they fought w/s and won(and constant companion wal-mart), someone had this to say about the inland wetlands commission there

"It just shows they listened to us," he said of the vote. "I'm elated."

I'd love to be able to say that.

Could you be wrong and could the people of Cheshire want the development? Is that possible?

Yes. However, before that can be known, the long term costs vs benefits must be properly weighed.

To do that we need outside analysts and proper environmental review. THEN, the information must be presented to the public in a thorough manner that allows time for review, reflection, and interaction. Thus far, we have been on a ridiculous fast-track.

The question is not, 'do you want a mall in town?' It's closer to, 'do you want a mall in town considering all of the costs?' We do not yet have the information we need to make the call, to answer that question.

We cannot rely only on public forums w/ a seasoned team of developers on one side of the issue and a passionate group of individuals w/ a hunch on the other. We need independent professionals and proper review. We need folks in town government to ask the right questions.

W/S knows what they are doing. We're not going to scare them away by doing this the right way. Although, I'd personally be fine with that.

We could demand and put into our books an impact study to be required when there is a development of this magnitude proposed. There are over 40 other towns who have this why not us? Are we that good or do we take the P&Z 2 minute study or the staff's(who ever they are) opinion . They are not experts on this matter. Only one P&Z member was asking the right questions and he is not even running this fall. This process needs to be reviewed quickly. There are three other corners and with certainty there will be more proposals.

We give many companies "TAX Abatements". It would be interesting to know how many of them responded. Cheshire does offer much to the business community. If you drive down to the FIP area it's has to be a great place to go and work. The surroundings are beutiful and you don't see many of the buildings. They provide us with tax revenues and require little in services. Go Cheshire businesses.

I am 100% sure that if the people knew exactly what was being proposed and what it would really cost them in taxes and a reduced quality of life they would overwhelmingly reject this.

They have purposely been mislead and kept in the dark by the owners, W/S, the town government and the press.

Queen Street is coming to Cheshire with all its traffic, pollution and sprawl.
