3 Strikes rally

Though I left early to attend the 8pm capital budget meeting, I thought the rally went really well. Thanks to Marilyn and Joe Bartoli for making it happen. With Dr. Petit there, I think the legislators in attendance understand that violent crime needs to be treated with the utmost seriousness.

Thanks to the many state legislators who came in support of the "3 Strikes" rule, including 3 of Cheshire's 5 legislators (Al Adinolfi, Sam Caligiuri and Mary Fritz). All three spoke and shared their thoughts. And not directly related to the "3 Strikes" rule, but related to this horrific event, I want to thank Al Adinolfi and Mary Fritz both for having voted to keep capital punishment as an option in a March 30, 2005 vote of the state House. For me personally, I don't care for capital punishment, but I absolutely believe that it should be an option.

Additionally, I noticed Councilmen Altieri, Orsini and Ruocco in attendance tonight. So thanks to them for their visible, if unspoken, support for the cause.

SHAME on Rep. Vickie Nardello
for not attending like all the
rest of Cheshire's legislators.

And if she was out of town, she could have sent a statement to be read. Shame on her.

Shame on you for turning this into a political attack.

Are you planning on running against Vickie?

I am not Tim. I have no idea of his plans.

My last post was COMPLETELY APPROPRIATE to the topic of this thread.

This was a rally to support state legislation, not a memorial service. All the other Cheshire legislators were there. Shame on Vickie for not at least sending a statement of support.

Senator Gaffey was missing as well, but he seems to forget Cheshire is in his district except for October in even numbered years.

I would like to think this event has awakened politicians in both parties that the solutions offered by the egghead experts just don;t work...but as was pointed out, somehow the parents of convicts are a more effective lobby than the parents of crime victims

Its been pointed out that the 2 suspects in the Petit murder case would not have been affected by the 3 strikes law. Let's be effective ..not reactive...

Anon 8:34:
JK could have been locked up for life prior to July 23 if the 3 strikes law had included prior burglaries while occupants were home. One of the demands of the petition is to amend the 3 strikes law to provide that.

If the 3 strikes law were also amended to provide for life upon the 5th or 10th non-violent felony conviction, that would keep career felons like SH locked up.

Then there is this recent case:

Convicted Murderer Charged in Home Invasion

Norwalk- A convicted murderer recently released from prison was arrested Monday morning in connection with a July 28 home invasion in which an elderly woman was stabbed.
Jerry B. Mitchell, 48, of 36 Butler St. was charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault, assault on a victim over 60 years old, first-degree burglary and fourth-degree larceny.

Mitchell also had other felony convictions, which should have kept him locked up for life prior to assaulting his latest elderly victim.

This isn't being "reactive". This is learning from experience.

Was gov Rell there?

We wouldn't expect the Governor of the state to attend, though she did send a message of support. Vickie didn't do either, unlike her local legislative colleagues.

Could Vickie have been on vacation?

No, Vickie is in Canada on some legislative junket. That has been reported in most of the local newspapers.

Can we tell these politicians to stay in Canada and not come back?

Vickie still could have sent a message of support, but it's doubtful she's sympathetic to getting tough on crime.

In a world where everything is rosey and perfect you are correct in your assertion to be effective not reactive. But in the real world where reactive is the only way politicians budge off their fat asses it is hopeless to count on this approach.

I point to Senator Shill Shummer who showed up to decry the bridge collapse in Minnesota. Needless to say he represents a state that just had a geyser of steam that reached the Crysler building's spire...but only one person died so he didn't have to go there.

And we have our own state delegation to point out the need to have state depts. better communicate. They make the rules, don't they?

I have come to the conclusion that it is only horrible disasters that shake these folks awake...and they know it too. Look how the delegation encouraged us to keep up the drum beat for reform before all is forgotten. Forgotten by whom? Them?, the people, the victims?

Its disgusting.
