3 strikes rally

I received this email from a friend:

Dear Friends,

I am organizing a rally in support of the 3 strike legislation for the State of Connecticut. I am requesting your support to send a message, not only to Hartford, but to our nation. We will do all in our power to prevent the horrific and senseless acts that occurred here in Cheshire last week.

Please forward this email to all your friends. We need to get the word out quickly. I will be sending out the details of the date and location over the next few days. Please lend your presence to this rally for a most worthy cause.

Thank you in advance for your support, and please pray for the Petit Family.

Sincerely,
Marilyn Bartoli

(I'll post more information when it becomes available.)

Does three strike work? How has it worked in California? How many redeemable lives will be lost in the hope of a quick answer (3 strikes). Evil exists...the good thing is that it is very rare. Let's not let our grief blind us into making reactionary laws.

Good thing Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson didn;t do anything rash about King George, eh?

I have no problem with a three strikes law. What I do have a problem with is the fact that violent felons get put back on the street to terrorize our citizens. This in not a reactionary law. It only helps to insure (like Jessica's Law) that appropriate sentences are given and sustained to those we need kept away from society.

Gee, do you suppose after 20 felony convictions and repeated stints in the slammer, that such career criminals are not going to be "rehabilitated" ??

My only concern is that a 3 strikes law be done right. Petty shoplifting shouldn't count toward a life sentence. It should clearly focus on violent criminals. And burglary should be treated as a violent crime.

A 3 strikes law will save lives. I know this first hand.

I was an elementary teacher in an urban area five years ago when one of my students was shot and killed by two career thugs.

10 year old Trina was in a playground when two recently-released criminals sprayed the place with lead shot. They were going after enemy gang members on the basketball court, but 24 pellets ended up in Trina's head, killing this beautiful, promising 10 year old girl.

Both thugs had lengthy, violent criminal records. They had been offered job assistance and other social assistance programs after release, but both refused. They only wanted to be gangstas.

Such habitual criminals are not going to be reformed, and society has an obligation to protect itself. So yes, "3 strikes, you're out." Keep them off the streets.

In California a man got life after his third offense which was shoplifting a CD.

We can't set hard and fast laws because of a horrific crime and ruin the live of many that can fit into society.

I agree that this should not send a person to prison for life. But another state doing 3-strikes the wrong way should not stop us from doing it the right way.

Again, a Connecticut law should target repeat, violent offenders. We've got to get them off the streets.

Cite the case please! What constituted strike 1 and 2? There ios usually more to a story than a headline that reads...life sentence over CD theft.

We need a career criminal law. Three strikes is a good place to start. We just passed Jessica's law, shamefully behind most of the nation. In this case one strike should be all they get. Judges and parole boards must be held accountable for their handling of criminal cases. If they can not be then mandatory sentencing must fill the void. In all cases common sense must prevail.
