Cheshire Town Post

Craig Houghton of Cheshire Town Post deserves a BIG thank you for posting town meetings to the web. You can now see the 2007 meetings from January 23, June 12 and June 26 on the web!!! Of special interest to many in town may be the "Shenanigate" meetings of June 12 & June 26. The June 26 portion of Shenanigate starts on this video at 46:15 (just click and drag the scroll bar... the whole action is nearly instantaneous if you have cable hookup... and you don't need to wait 46 minutes to watch!). Also of interest to me on this particular video segment is the Q&A on the town's fund balance. You can see my questions at 16:10. You really should watch it.

And something that's been on my mind... a real pet peeve of mine is when someone doesn't want to listen to me, so they just talk right over me. Does anyone else find that annoying?

Tim White
Town Council, 4th District

p.s. Make sure you stop by Cheshire Town Post, leave a comment and say thanks to Craig Houghton for getting this up. And remember that you can do a front page post over there.

Speaking of "Shenanigate" - Nice try by one writer to the editor of the Herald in trying to smooth over Esty's outrageous accusatory comments in the "shenanigate" incident. The writer claims Esty is a "dedicated, hardworking, conscientious public servant who gives generously of her time and energy on the council without financial renumeration." She writes further that Esty's actions (of dragging the clerk's name through the mud)are in accord with the Charter's "Standards of Conduct."
What a joke! All councilors put in many hours of service on the council. We all know that. They don't get paid. We all know that too. Nothing new there.
If one were to read the Standards of Conduct in the Charter (which you can easily do online, Sec.10-1)they'd see councilors/elected officials are expected to be "fair, open minded, unbiased, impartial, etc". The write FAILED to use these words to describe Esty because, in all truth, NO ONE can say she fits the description by her recent actions. The truth is, is that she purposely wanted to "create a scandal" of sorts and she saw the opportunity to do so. A good councilor, one that was fair, impartial, etc., would have gone into the clerk's office and simply asked questions about office procedures. Then, if they felt improvement was necessary, they would refer the matter to the Ordinance committee for further review. A fair and impartial councilor would NEVER have handled it the way Esty did.

That would have been the easiest thing to do. But if there was a sense that this all needed to be "official," if anyone had asked me I would've suggested:

NEW BUSINESS

1) Discussion and action re: Rules governing appointments to Boards and Commissions.

Either the full Council or Ordinance Rev Comm could've taken this up.

I think that could have addressed everyone's concerns without pointing fingers.

Needless to say, no one asked.

Clearly a better Esty is better than any of the Republicans. Who is running against her? Does he/she really have a chance? She wins easy!

Or so you/she hopes!

"Clearly a better Esty is better"

We need people with intergrity. Estey has certainly shown she doesn't have it. It's time to get rid of this mud slinger. And, when she is gone, the council meetings should take less time and we won't have to listen to her going on and on. She really like to hear herself.

Maybe Esty should investigate why the town tax collector changes names on tax bills in an attempt to collect them. (Read the editorial in last Thursday's Herald-apparently this is what happened to at least one taxpayer). Will she drag him through the mud like she did with the town clerk?
I hope the situation does get investigated but hopefully in a different manner than Esty's prior actions. Even the tax collector deserves a fair and impartial investigation.
