Capital bgt 8/16
The Budget Committee met tonight. We discussed the budgets for:
Planning & Development - open space, economic development & energy commission
Public Safety - fire (no police)
Leisure Services - parks & recreation
See details by clicking on this image:I voiced my general concern that I'm uncertain about voter support for open space and recreation projects. And I don't care for spending $500,000 in property taxes on West Main Street... I think people would be more interested in a comprehensive approach to dealing with the pool, rather than starting new projects.
Anyway, the meeting started at 8pm and ended near 11pm. And it's late now and I'm tired... so goodnight!

Assuming it will be done in a way that makes sense, imagine trying to re-run with a NO vote, or on the record opposition, to greater transparency hanging around your neck? Let's pull back the curtain for residents who don't have cable or time enough to attend.

I'd certainly prefer to see the money spent on open space and rec, rather than on a $500,000 dollar gift for the West Main Street property owners.
Then again, with the mall on the way, I suppose they'll need all the help they can get. Will it be a slice from Pop's and a walk over to that cafe there, or a W/S style Bertucci's pie and an after-lunch Frappuccino from Starbucks?

Is this when the credit card comes out? Some of this is needed but some is not. The voters should understand that this might add up to 10-40% of our budget. Taxpayers should add 10-40% to their tax bill and think how much it would cost them if they had to pay cash. We need to be careful and understand the full cost of these expenditures before we vote. Let's not just pass it along to the future generation.
I would take Pop's over Bertucci's. The pizza is better and cheaper and the owner lives in town. Go Pop's.
I can't understand why taxpayers should have to foot the bill for improving the looks of these businesses. Certainly the Strollo's have plenty of money to make their property look a lot better and their property is probably the worst looking. Lyon and Billard has plenty of resouces. As for the rest of these businesses, there are a lot of things they could do better.
I thought $500,000 was ridiculous, now they want to raise it to $1,000,000.
I would hope that if this money is spent, that all the properties should be reassested, just like when homeowners make improvemnets. e
$500k for west main.....unacceptable.....a waste of money and if the town manager and the town council wish to and approve of such expense...its tiem voters and taxpayers demand their removal from office....
The majority of the business owners do not want this. I mean 13 of th 14 or so have said no. What needs to be done is visit each business, ask if they support the idea. Take the results to a Town Council meeting and read the results.
They own their businesses and it should be their choice.
How about improving the homeowners
property values by starting a program to give us curbs and sidewalks. The newer developments have them. It adds beauty to the neighborhoods and lets the young kids ride their bikes on relatively safe ground. Some of us have been paying taxes for 20+ years and maybe had our streets paved once. Bulk pick up once every 2 years!! Charging $2 per 10 pounds if a homeowner (taxpayer) brings bulk to the dump himself!!!
We need a third party that will take care of the average citizens concerns.
