Turmelle on the bus contract and teacher staff levels

The NHRs Luther Turmelle offers this piece on the Council sending the school transportation contract to bid.

And he also has this piece on the annual notice sent to teachers about the possibility that their contracts will not get renewed:

The Board of Education voted unanimously Thursday night to notify the roughly 40 nontenured teachers that they may not get a contract next year.

Superintendent of Schools Greg Florio and members of the board stressed the action doesn’t mean the district is going to lay off 40 teachers.

40 ponetial layoffs. And why was Florio and the Free Spending Five so adamant that we needed to approve that excessive contract last fall. Didn't they read the Wall Street Journal and realize --no tax revenue--no money to pay teachers?

That unaffordable contract will end up seriously damaging the Cheshire public school system

Contracts are not really the culprit here. The school administration, teachers union, bad arbitration laws, and the airheads in the state legislature all got us to this point.

The superintendent needs to also put out a plan to cut the amazing bloated ranks of paid administration with no class room assignments in his organization. Each vice principal or assistant superintendent is roughly worth at least 3 or 4 junior class room teachers. Aren't principals and department heads enough?

Although we can't easily do anything about the airheads in the state legislature we can vote out bad local administrations. TC majority and the school board need reconstitution and rejuvenation at the next election.

The boe sends letters every year to the nontenured teachers. It's routine.

Wait to see how many teachers retire before you start panicking about teachers being laid off. Even in the -0- budget year no one was laid off. Besides, if the teachers want to avoid any lay offs they just need to make some concessions - if they don't want to do that then it's their choice to go with a few layoffs instead.

we should never have approved this insane contract in the first place.

It was like going to Raymour and Flanigan while your house was on fire.

How about all the other no bid contracts that the boe "offers" to their friends yearly. I know the snowplowing contract involves a phonecall to two people who say the do or dont want to plow. Then they say how much they want and get the contract. Takes 5 minutes to settle the contract.

Make all the little kiddies take the bus and this will eliminate the constant traffic jam in front of the schools.
