Proposed ND: likely delay until summer

From the NHRs Luther Turmelle:

It will probably be next summer at the earliest before the Massachusetts developer that has proposed building 146 condominium units and 500,000 square feet of retail space near Interstate 691 goes before municipal planning officials for the third and final round of approvals needed for the project.

W/S Development had been scheduled to go before the Planning and Zoning Commission this fall with detailed plans for The Shoppes at Cheshire. But the dramatic decline of the nation’s economy has meant the developer has had to rethink its timetable for the development, a project manager for W/S Development said Friday.

“We continue to hear nothing, but positive comments from retailers about this project,” said Jeff Curley of W/S Development. “But we haven’t been able to get the retailers to commit to the level of detail we need to have in order to bring it before the town for the final round of approvals.”

Until summer of what year?

What a joke. W/S will be lucky to survive never mind expand. As far as Curley is concerned, he should start looking for another career.

Macy's has decided not to renew their lease at the Meriden Square; JC Penny's mulling over whether or not to renew, ALSO. Ann Taylor just announced closing of 177 stores nationwide....WHY WOULD CHESHIRE ALLOW THE NORTH END TO BE DEVEOLOPED? TO HAVE A BUNCH OF EMPTY BUILDINGS???

If ground is broken, we're probably going to end up with a weed-filled parking lot, a dollar store, and another Dunkin' Donuts.

If you think there is a credit crunch now, wait until Obama tries to finance annual trillion dollar federal deficits. Who is going to lend money on speculative real estate development when the feds are glomming up every loose dime for their sundry bailout schemes?

Does anyone know the time constraints under which W/S must file site plans, etc? And what happens if they miss those deadlines?

Didn't we here this same excuse in the 80's?

I think Curley ought to get with Larry and Moe and just pack it all in.

With all the zone text changes, change of zoning, and all the other giveaways, the real value of this property has gone way up. gh.

The assessor should make sure that it is assessed at it's new true value.
