Happy Thanksgiving

I'm thankful for still having my family, particularly my mom & dad (married since 1961!)... and getting to live near them. I'm thankful for my health and my job.

I'm thankful that I get to live in a peaceful, stable country (I watched Hotel Rwanda this week). I'm thankful for my freedom.

I'm thankful for all the support I receive, even though I'm imperfect and am not always right. I'm thankful that He watches over me.

I hope everyone has a nice Thanksgiving.

There is a Jewish prayer which begins, "How very many are the reasons for us to give thanks and praise to God for blessings too numerous for us to count."

A wise, old priest taught me to say that prayer each day, then to follow it by naming at least one specific reason to give thanks. On some days I name things as general as my health, my friends, or the beauty of nature. On other days I name more specific things like a talent, my pets, or some kind thing someone said.

After 7 years of doing this daily, I've thought of over 2500 reasons to be thankful, and still the reasons are inexhastable!

The same wise man also taught me that gratitude is an attitude, not just polite words we say. It's an attitude that pervades our lives, reminding us in tough times that we are still blessed with abundant gifts.

Gratitude is not our gift to God. Rather, our ability to feel gratitude is God's gift to us. God is not so insecure that He needs praise to bolster His feelings. However, when we live in gratitude, it lifts up our own lives to do so much more with the gifts we have.

Thanksgiving greetings from the monastery to you and your family, Tim. And thanks be to God !
