Dog park discussed

The Herald's John Rook offers this piece on Thursday's dog park discussion.

Plans for a new dog park in Cheshire continue to move forward as interested residents attempt to make the idea into a reality.

Currently, the group hopes to secure the old landfill site off of Route 70 — adjacent to Artsplace — and utilize approximately four acres of the land.

The initial cost of the fence is expected to be approximately $8,700, estimated Meyerjack, who added that $25,000 would be needed to truly get the project off the ground and running. “That would mostly go towards fencing, parking, and infrastructure,” he commented.

The idea of a dog park may be nice, but with the economy in such sad shape, is this worth pursuing? Even if $25,000 is raised (which seems like a low amount for fencing, paving, landscaping, etc), who will maintain the property? Will town employees have to be paid to mow the 4 acres and plow the added parking lot area? We should be looking to reduce expenses to the town, rather than increasing them.

why not add a couple of dollars on to dog licenses to raise the money?

We should get a artificial turf grant from the state for the dog park. Artificial turf would save thousands in mowing and maintenance costs. Plus the use of artificial turf will allow over 220 days of use and it could have multiple uses. If it is on hill, it could be used for sledding, or how about extreme frisbee, or a slip and slide children's park. I'm sure that once it is built, they will come and do their duty. And who knows maybe a movie will be made about it called Field of Dreams, no that's already taken.

Any thought of some fire hydrants? Could provide a training area for firefighters.

Most people have over half acre lots in Cheshire. That's plenty of room for the dogs and the people that don't have the land what's the matter with all of our parks, trails and open space? This is not a good time for all things that are not needed. Wait for a better time.

There really is no place to let your dog run with all the little league games going on all year around.....For 25k I think it can be a good project.

Raising $25,000 for a dog park could be a good project for dog owners. All you need is 25 people at $1,000 each.

Fine. Go ahead and raise it then.

Just heard from the cook. The free lunch is over.

Won't we have the same sanitation problems at the dog park as we had with e geese at Mixville?

I forgot how many ponds of poop they estimated for the geese. Does anyone have an estimate for this park?

Mixville park is a good place for the dogs to run. They have that big hill on the right side. Plenty of room and we can take care of our geese problem with all the dogs running around at the same time. Dogs chased the geese away and we paid for that service. Just a thought.

I like the idea of allowing the dogs on an artificial turf field. If an dog park is one of the biggest issues this Town has then we are all in deep doo doo.

It seems the sentiment here is anti dog park. I heartily agree. This town's spending priorities are not realistic. Artificial turf, dog park? On the contrary, we should be cutting spending. And BTW , since when does the Parks and Rec manager, who is a town employee, become a spokesman and funds collector for these dog owners? The commission meets December 3. I plan to be there to voice my opinion.

I would like to know why it is more inportant for dogs to have a place to socialize than it is for my children to have sidewalks to walk to school on. I have written the town two times for them to put sidewalks in my neighborhood and all I have gotten are answers about how it is not necessary. Do we really want to talk about what is necesssary...not a dog park.
