Termgate

Or should we call it Water(PollutionControlAuthority)Gate? lol.

No... I'm kidding. An investigation is a serious matter. And for those of you who haven't seen it, here's the link to the MRJ article on the pending investigation (by Leslie Hutchison).

What can I say about this? I think much of this was precipitated by changes to this .pdf file on the town website... it details the elected & appointed officials in town, including name and term of office.

But as far as I know, that document is not a "controlling legal document" (btw, I can't help but think of Al Gore when I say that! lol.), although I believe it is used by both parties in a "customary fashion" as a "controlling document." Notice how I'm already parsing hairs here?

Anyway, if you look at the document and look at the PZC, you'll notice that Sean Strollo's term ends in 2011. Yet I distinctly recall him running for office in 2005 in a head-to-head matchup against (one of Cheshire's most likable Democrats) Angie D'Agostino... for a four year term. Therefore, Sean's term would expire in 2009. Right? Well... my guess is that is simply a clerical error... probably everyone who got elected to PZC in 2005 got entered with a term ending in 2011. And consider this... the person who updated this... probably isn't nearly as involved in this sort of stuff... as most bloggers. I think we probably tend to be a group of people who get much more involved in the details than others. So to say that Sean's term (ending in 2011) was probably a data entry error... is almost certainly true.

Additionally, Bill Kunde is still listed on that same .pdf as a member of the Energy Commission. And he resigned a few months ago.

So I think the file is probably fraught with inaccuracies... which... while it should be accurate, a clerical error is not a big deal... it is just something that needs to be corrected.

I'm not going to opine any further. It's just that at this early stage, I thought it would be worthwhile to begin to point out things that (probably) should just be put to bed... without including them as a part of any investigation of "shenanigans."

let's wait and see what the investigation shows...but a clerical error is not the same as someone asking the town clerk to change her offical record....is it???

Tim, I'm surprised you went along with the dem majority to remove Pelton. Wouldn't it make more sense to conduct an investigation first, get the facts, and then make a decision? If this turns out to be just a clerical error on a website, then what? Pelton gets tossed just because someone can't proof read their typing? Doesn't make sense!

3:49 When I voted, I had no idea about the proposed investigation.

This person's (chairman) term expired on 1/?/07? What happened in Feb? Given the holidays etc. ok but it's now June. Shouldn't the Dem's replaced or re-appointed the person? Are they the "MAJORITY PARTY"? The ball was in their court.

Be carful they might give you more laughing gas.

David “Haldeman and Ehrlichman” Schrumm has been strangely quiet this week…

I agree that a vote should not have been taken until all the facts were in. Since the Dem's kept saying they wanted Mr. Pelton to stay wouldn't that have made more sense?

In today's New Haven Register, Hall and Esty have started to back peddle. While Esty was quoted as calling it "cheating", she then says that "maybe it was a clerical error. Sorry Mr. Hall, sorry Mrs. Esty - you don't make outrageous accusations then simply say "oops". Either cough up the evidence or apologize - publicly.

10:03PM There is nothing wrong with disagreeing with someone politically but to attack someones integrity is uncalled for.

10:27 Can you post that NH Register article here so we can all read it? Or parts of it? I couldn't find it on line.

If Esty is now trying to back off on her accusations, it's too late. She needs to publicly apologize and maybe even step down from the council.

Oh I get it the r's try to minipulate the terms of the members of WPCA and now they get caught and its the fault of the people who caught them.
Man now I understand

The NHR article is not on-line, but here is a couple of excerpts: (the article is in Friday's paper)

But fellow Democrat Elizabeth Esty said that while Pelton has served admirably on the WPCA, "he would not have been reappointed" because somebody sought to have the town records altered so that Pelton's term was lengthened beyond the start of this year.

"Someone went behind the council to do this; an attempt was made to cheat" Esty said....

Esty said it is possible that the change in records that gave Pelton a longer term than he actually had may be a clerical error.

Maybe we need to elect people to the Town Council who know how to use a calendar

Pelton resigned and a new appointment was made that is a fact

What happened between 2/07 and 6/12/07? Why did it take so long to re-appoint or replace someone? That's the first question that should be asked? Who is responsible? Why didn't the council member that checked and found this out in FEB. report it at that time? Why if the person is so qualified and he did no wrong was he not re-appointed? I repeat he did no wrong. 3D's, 3'R and 1'U still seems fair to me.

10:57 I've been on the Council for nearly four years. In that time, I don't recall anyone ever mentioning vacancies at a Council meeting. As well, I do recall numerous times where people remained active with a board/commission until s/he was replaced.

So from my perspective... that point would just muddy the waters in understanding the concern.

Tim, I think what 10:57 is trying to point out is why did it take so long for this to be brought out. Apparently, this is such a burning issue it calls for an investigation. Why, if this was discovered in Feb. did it take so long for Esty to bring it to light (4 months)? Also, why is this person being removed when he was supposedly doing an admirable job and would have been reappointed. If this turns out to be nothing more than a clerical error it seems we have done an injustice to this individual.

11:18 You're exactly right. If this is just a clerical error (apparently there are many errors on the website), then Esty needs to publicly apologize as she steps down from the council.

"it seems we have done an injustice to this individual."

Why we? It's Esty and Hall. Has the power already gone to their heads?

Somebody should tell them that the people of Cheshire elected them not the developers. Or maybe they did.

How is changing a term linked to the North End? They knew how Pelton was going to vote? Did Pelton tell them?
