Posting on poles

I had a conversation with someone who I consider extremely knowledgable on the law (CT Statute #23-65(a)). What was interesting to me was... he said that the utility companies (I think CL&P owns the poles) officially discourage posting information on the poles, but they do not prohibit it. Instead, he said state law prohibits it. But he also said that same law prohibits posting information on trees.

Trees?

So this is illegal?

That seems absurd to me. I mean... I can cut down a tree on my property, but I can't put a sign on it? And I'm curious to know the wording of the law... does it prohibit treehouses? Would full enforcement require the demolition of all treehouses? Would all birdfeeders need to be removed? Ok, ok... I know I'm talking in the extreme, but... "justice is blind," right?

Here's the NHRs take on the pole posting issue (by Luther Turmelle).

I take all my neighborhood kids out every night and we pull these suckers down and then we go home and toast marshmellows with them while singing
Yes WS
Yes Ws
No to
old timers

What you are doing is wrong. If you have a problem with it call the police. As far as using "W/S" in all of your comments I would bet that they would take exception to the way you're throwing their name around.

This shouldn't be an issue. No one has bothered anyone putting notices on trees or poles until now. There are no trespassing signs all over the trees on the proposed site of development. Why isn't anyone telling them their in violation. It's only a few people who do not want any opposition to WS development. Sad isn't it. Am I to assume that going forward notices of lost animals or tag sales will be discouraged. I think not, it will only be a problem until the WS issue is settled. After that everyone will go back to normal. This is totally silly and it's making Cheshire a laughingstock.

Whenever I get a chance I take the signs down and then I put them in a bag and I leave them on the front door of the local animal shelter so they can use them for the reason they were produced=to catch the droppings of dogs and other animals
I plan on going out tonight and getting a few more

Since there are only 9 people in town who are voting on this, isn't it kind of silly to post signs all over town anyway? If this were going to referendum, I could see it but what difference does it make at this point?

You are right. Think about how many people have no clue this is even going on (the vote). It's been kept quite. Why has not one article been written to provide the public with the difference between the present regulations and the proposed? This would have been beneficial to all Cheshire citizens so they could have understood the importance and weigh in at the public meeting (pro or con). Why were we let down. This is a huge change.

Newspapers don't always print the truth as in this case (NHR). We should look at the Cheshire police blotter. They printed a name of someone who they thought put up the signs. Why didn't they print the name of the person who is so worried about the signs. A complaint must have made to the police to investigate this right? Guilty until proven innocent is the case here.

I came hoem from work one evenign to find a no mall poster, posted on a telephoen poll directly in front of my house adjacent to my mailbox and on a tree that sits on my property adjacent to the road. I immediately tore them down. Those who placed them had no right to do so, specifically placing them on my tree , which is on my property is unacceptable.

I now make it a habit to tear any and all of these posters down when I take my nightly walk down our road....

Was this NHR reporter an eye witness to the offense or was he writing off a police report? Who called him to report on this important matter? Numerous complaints? Letters to citizens who have signs on their poles. What a project. What is that going to do? Waste of time.

10:35 Watch out for the pole police they might blame you for putting them up. $50 fine or six months in jail.

Last night I got all the neighbors to get together and tear down all the no mall posters-we want to keep Cheshire a "family town" so we are making sure that the family values are being followed.

Anonymous said...

hey 8:13, you'd better not trespass on my property and take the sign off my tree, or you might be on the receiving end of my expressing my second amendment rights.

Anonymous said...

And you would be breaking the law and that would send you to jail
Not a good statement for the anti people at all

Anonymous said...

but he wouldn't be tearing down any more signs from private property again. So let him try, make my day.

Unliek the folks who put posters on up on a tree on my private property, I will not cross onto someone elses property to take it down. But if you put one on my property again or on a pole taht is on public property, you can be assured I will remove them....

It seems the anti-mall people are now taking the Paris Hilton approach. It's just not fair to make them obey the law.

of course they are on a crusade and they will not listen to anyone and blindly follow their leaders who are failing them-just like Bush and Chaney

Could anyone tell me why they want the mall? Most of the positive public input has come from the realestate community. They have gained a stature today which is the result of fat commissions on inflated home prices. This is great for them but why is their voice one of such import? Are they the most honest people you ever met. They smile and shakes hands super great.

Most criticism has come from people that question the wisdom of permiting residential in the mix. There is concern from many about the fear of a proliferation of more big stores. Are these concerns and fears so unwarranted that a perceved majority in town rolls over to the back slapping glad handing realeastate crowd?

Its fine with me that everyone make a living anyway ehonest way they can but to expect anything but blind support for a development project from the realestate community is simply hogwash. Many of them leave town for their second home in the country.

When this project goes forward everyone will receive a tax bill that is higher than the year before. This project will not save the town a dollar. There will be a paid fire dept in five years.

Now we all know that Cheshire is such rich town but the real rich towns don't have this project coming to their town. So to all of you upscale coupon clipping cheapskates I hope you are really happy with the blight you hope you are able to bring to Cheshire. I know its a new town center...Pluto.

Under most circumstances I would not rush to criticize a Grabar Cartoon in the Herald. I do think it odd his images aften have no mouths but I figure that is some trendy thing that the artist feels permits him to be their voice. (ART 101 for dorks)

This cartoon was particularly lame. Garbar actually declared that all opposition to the mall (anything for that matter) is by people that don't know what the subject/project is all about even if there is a project. I know a "yes" man will leap to defend this tripe but it really was nothing more than ignorance on display by a cartoonist that was given his marching orders by the paper that defined two weeks before all of us worthless anonymous naysayers.

Its sad the Herald has been neutered by its lust for all that new ad money. Meanwhile Grabar got about $50 for his cartoon. What a dolt!

I agree the cartoon in the Cheshire Herald was lame and offensive!!! The residents voicing concern over this development know exactly what it is about the project that bothers them. Most because of residential. Other concerns are big box stores, over inflated tax gains, and the fact that 400 acres are involved not just the 100 for W/S.

YOU ARE ALL NUTS

Anonymous said...

We are nuts?
We have guts!

Why level the trees?
To raise taxes and fees?

That’s a crock
The town will still be in hock.

Stop the bleeding!
The council needs some weeding.

Pool supporters should go
They are the taxpayers foe.

Let’s start with Matt A.
Hip hip hooray!

I heard that the Cheshire Herald is owned by the Meriden Record Journal. That might explain why both papers support the local developers Paul Bowman and Doug Calcagni and W/S. And, it might explain why they don't want to write any story that might let the townspeople really know the truth of what's going to happen.

Is PZC talking about the north end tonight?

Anonymous said...

Someone stated that within (5) years a paid fire department will exist all because of the "mall". With the amount of shops and residential, why does Orange still have an all paid department?

Anonymous said...

If there is a paid department in Cheshire it is becasue of the way the department has been treated by certain Council members, not any development in town.

Anonymous said...

Yes we all know that the Republicans always vote against anything that deals with public safety and anti drinking campaigns and against the schools and are against the lifestyle center and well they are CAVE Men

Anonymous said...

You never even listened to the questions people are raising. It's always the R's. You have a mental block. This is not a D and R issue. Think about the future of the town.

Anonymous said...

We have videos of all the people who have taken down these signs and will be posting them on youtube and sending them to peoples employers.
No to W/S
No to people with marshmallows

Anonymous said...

"Someone stated that within (5) years a paid fire "

With 400 acres of malls and hundreds of rentals in high rises, why would anyone want to be a volunteer fireman?

The first thing the mall owners will be crying for will be better fire and police protection. With all the added traffic, another fire station will be a priority.

And, you know what? They will have the town council have an emergency meeting, behind closed doors, and they will get it.

Last night I got some of the neighborhood high school kids to do a civics project. We tore down all the anit mall signs and I had the kids write and essay about how they were doing their civic duty as fully functioning adults and advancing the cause of family values. It was a wonderful night and I think we got all the signs in town. Go WS

So you had the some of your "Pave Cheshire Over Group" out. Who was leading the rope, I'm sure it couldn't be you.

You can't wait to see one of the most beautiful pieces of property paved over. Anything to make a buck and the heck with everyone else.

Hopefully the P&Z members will see through all the crap and realize that this zone change is the worst thing that could happen to Cheshire.
