our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor

Probably the most powerful words I've ever read:

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor (USHistory.org).

Although I think the opening is more well known:

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States.

But again... for me, it's the closing words that say it all:

we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

Thanks for posting that, Tim. I bet you'd enjoy The Declaration of Independence: America's Heroic Saga by John Ridpath. He goes into the history and context of the document with plenty of interesting trivia and reverence thrown about.

I used to be a card-carrying Objectivist (translate to libertarian if you like). And, although I don't run around quoting Rand all that often anymore, I think this quote is appropriate:

"If it is ever proper for men to kneel, we should kneel when we read the Declaration of Independence."

Unless we agree with the decison planning and zoning is going to make on monday which is to say yes
Then there is no need to throw off such govt
In other words when the vast majority elects people and then they do the right thing (change plan) and we like it and agree with it then there is not problem
thats the way to think of it

Like the Bush administration, never have so few mislead and hidden the truth from so many.

Thank your Democrat controlled town council, Town Manager, and Town Planner. When the people of Cheshire find out what they have done to this town, they will be mad as hell.

Thank you 10:47. Just goes to show that Dems and Reps are equally capable of hiding the truth. At least we have one council member (TW) who's honest, principled, and forthright.

If this is truly government for the people and by the people then P&Z has no choice but to remove residential from this proposal. The overwhelming majority of Cheshire residents DO NOT want residential. There are a few on the P&Z that have stated that residential would not be a benefit. Let's see if the rest are bought off by the developer.
