Open forum 7/21

Today's MRJ has two articles that may be of particular interest to Cheshire. W/S filed papers yesterday requesting a hotel for the ND. And there's an article comparing costs (to swimmers & taxpayers) of community pools in the area... the article seems to highlight Cheshire's pool.

As Barry Bonds closes in on Hank Aaron's record, I only get more upset about it. Thing is... I remember being in high school in 1990 and hearing that you're not supposed to use steroids... that's it's cheating. It seemed pretty easy to me to understand.

Remember to tell your friends about the party caucuses this Tuesday (GOP= town hall; dems = senior center). Rs start at 7pm. I'm guessing that the Ds will start at the same time. The NHR reported that Dave Orsini is not running. And there are rumors that at least one other incumbent may walk away. And frankly, I think it may be a good time to walk. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a few incumbents leave the Council this year... be it their decision... or the decision of the voters.

The post office is apparently back on track (NHR, by Luther Turmelle) due to the efforts of our senior Senator, Chris Dodd.

This is a prime example of how we can work together with our officials in Hartford and Washington by keeping good relations with both
If it was up to the Republicans on the council they would have made enemies of Dodd etc and we would get nowhere

"If it was up to the Republicans on the council they would have made enemies of Dodd etc and we would get nowhere"

huh? When/what have Council Republicans done to make "enemies" of Dodd?

Tim,

The following is from Tim Slocum, the former Cheshire Republican Town Committee Chairman on your blog, listed under Iraq and “Cow Farts,” on March 30, 2007. Maybe he isn’t a member of the town council, but at least one Republican member of the council has expressed similar comments, often.

“Liberals breathe the same air, go to the same schools and churches and enjoy many of the same entertainments but they just don’t get it. That is why they will continue to let the fascists win and let our freedoms slip away. And when the enemy actually hits our homeland again they will be the first to blame a government agency, open hearings and be outraged by how this could happen here. Meanwhile they’re prepared to wage all out war on cow farts, incandescent light bulbs, global warming and your carbon footprint because some government agency says it must be so.

At the end of the day I fear liberals most.”

I don't think comments like that have any connection to the Dodd issue whatsoever. In fact, I'd have considerably less respect for Dodd if Limbaughesque comments held more power over his better judgement than did reason.

That being said, historically speaking, that statement attributed to Tim Slocum, is laughably indefensible.

Sorry, Slocum's comments were not laughable.

His comments were wrong and vicious. Unfortunately, some local Republicans share his same beliefs. The vile and hatred I have heard them say about “Democrats” is frightening and dangerous.

So, saying that, have a nice day csh, even if you might be a Democrat…

I suppose I have a hard time taking comments like his seriously. They should be like water off a ducks back, but you're right -- they cannot be laughed off. There's malice there, and comments like that are not dismissed by enough people.

For the sake of clarity then, I'd like to restate my original comment: Dodd has shown himself to be above letting comments like Slocum's get to him, but that being said, Slocum's malicious comment has no merit.

Slocum could not have put these comments together himself
He stole them from Rush

csh and co.

Since the Democrats in Congress have killed a "John Doe" bill aimed at protecting tipsters about terrorism from lawsuits, how exactly is Slocum so wrong in his central premise?

I can only conclude the Democrat party will protect special interest lawyers and then bleat and whine after the fact when effective measures to protect our citizens were rendered ineffective by their agenda

Some Democrats "get it" and do support effective security measures. Unfortunately, many of these folks are in the process of being purged by the likes of Kos and his netroots allies.

since you asked... if the pnac crowd pushing the 'fear liberals' message from the top-down concentrated on real security measures in the first place, instead region destabilization and threat inflation for the sake of political capital, the democrats wouldn't have to clean up this mess. Thankfully, they're up to the job. I think that job starts with political reform and the restoration of our constitutional rights.

How exactly does a particular security measure like that (save the withdrawal from Iraq) serve any appreciable purpose while the folks in charge (bush admin, not the military) take actions abroad that appear designed to fan the flames of regional chaos and encourage worldwide contempt for the U.S.?

CSH, perhaps you could explain why the NY MTA, run by those notorious neo-cons Spitzer and Bloomberg spends millions on advertising saying "See something, Say something"

http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/mta/news/releases/?en=070717

Alas, the DC Democrats have a new policy: "say something, sue something" At least the Dems from NY voted the right way,

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&session=1&vote=00261#position

maybe because unlike "moderate" Dems in rural states they have constituents who might get blown up on trains and what not

You're trying to take a macro question like, "how exactly is Slocum so wrong in his central premise?" and tackle it by concentrating on a micro issue like a tipster bill with all its intricities.

Assuming you are who I think you are (I could be wrong), how can we ever have a decent conversation when you cycle through the same tricks. :) Next, you'll jump to a new facet or topic. Let's stick with the big-picture when trying to prove a big-picture point.

His thesis was essentially that liberals are incompetant whiny finger-pointing flakes (flitting between environmental and other concerns) and that makes them dangerous.

The foreign and domestic policies of the Bush-Cheney co. are the real danger to our security. The danger posed by their failed experiments at home and abroad far overshadow the 'threat' from a liberal camp with a big tent and a concern for a variety of issues.

I'm an average Joe who's tired of hearing folks like you:

a) blame everything on Bush's Iraq policy (as if the Iranian hostage crisis, the first WTC bombing and the USS Cole were due to events in 2003)

b) attack Republican tactics when you are out using the same broad brush from the left side of the plate

c) Because of your obsession with point a) refuse to refute any proff mustered that Republican criticism of Democrats as unwilling to seriously deal with national security is valid.

The "tipster bill" IS a macro bill. Unless you think safety in public places is a local issue ala Ron Paul. The point is the Democrat leadership gutted the bill in the dark of night to appease a special interest group--trial lawyers

Deal with THAT fact, not more rhetoric recycled from that golddigger Arianna whatsherface

The Hotel is another goody the good ole boys are just throwing in. Time for the Cheshire Herald to run a poll that shows 98% of Cheshire residents want this and can't live without it.

I'll bet a lot the the planning and zoning commission knew about the hotel and that explains why they didn't ask one question about why W/S needed building heights up to and over 65 ft. There are only two members on the P&Z that should remain. This commission did not represent the people of Cheshire, they represented the developers and continue to do so.

Just like they are going to reduce the number of children by limiting the tenements to 2 bedrooms. they will cut the sewage from the hotel in half by installing 1/2 toilets.

the problem with the rep on the council is that when the state reps come in they get alot of negative talk from the likes of schrumm orsini and ruocco
They rail and scream at them and then they wonder why the relationship is so bad
/slocum would do the same if he were in power
Let us hope that never happens

Tim White said...

Well, if you want to paint with wide strokes... that's your choice. But when you do, I will challenge you to substantiate your claims.

re watch any video of when the state reps come in and they are treated like dirt by the reps who drone on endlessly about unfunded mandates and binding arb and blah blah
Right lets get nothing done

"the problem with the rep on the council"

You sound like Justin or someone pumping for him. You don't know what your talking about.

Anonymous said...

watch the video and tell me if this is any way to get any kind of coop. from anyone
I know that the members of the general assembly who represent us think that the treatment they get from orsini ruocco and schrumm is beyond disrespectful
the other dems on the council may disagree with the members of the gen assembly but they don't make complete fools of themselves in the process

In the MRJ article about the hotel.

There are a few interesting points beside the surprise addition of the hotel.

Voelker says that there is a large number of applications for the fall. Are these related to the zone change and since they have to be rules on in a limited time frame, will P&Z be rubber stamping these too? Better have Esty pencil in another 20% increase in sewer plant capacity.

The latest application is now called The Cheshire Route 10 LLC, soon to be aka Urban Blight LLC.
It's interesting that besides W/S, there is Miller, Napolitano, Wolff LLC as applicants. We have some of Cheshire's good ole boys as part of the deal and they will most likely do the residential and hotel, they've most likely been salivating for months. Exactly who the local boys are it's hard to find out, as they hide behind their LLC. Most likely Bowman, Calcagni and DiNatali are still involved, but it would be nice to know who else is, so we can give everyone credit for what they are doing to Cheshire.

Stay tuned, more surprises are sure to follow.

"At the end of the day I fear liberals most.”

Not all liberals are created equal and many Dems parade as though they are liberals, like those on the town council and a number on the P&Z commission who simply do the bidding of the special interests.

Hotels? It was zoned for this in the 1980's. What took so long? Now I can't wait to shop until I drop and then I can stay over night at the hotel. Hope they have a masseuse. Can't wait. Hope everone will enjoy the "NEW CHESHIRE".

Great place and it just got better. SEX, DRUGS, AND ROCK AND ROLL.

The hotel will be a great addition to this wonderful lifestyle center. This insures that there will be something going on all night long.

It will be a great place to meet women and party all night long. Thank your good friends, Bowman, Calcagni, DiNatali, Milone, Voelker, Harris, Coburn, Dawson, Hall, Estey,Visconti, Justin, and all the other good supporters of this wonderful gift to Cheshire, including all the the reporters from the Herald, MRJ, Waterbury Republican that helped W/S and all the other members of Council, the Development Commission, Chamber of Commerce and P&Z members that voted for this.

Great place to raise kids. They don't have to go to school, they can learn great careers right at the Lifestyle center.

And, the best part is that the mall kids can teach our students everything that they learn.

P&Z did a great job. They deserve a lot of credit. Thanks Marty, Patty and Woody for keeping the hearings in line.

Sixty-five was the amount the developers needed for the height of a clock tower or some other symbol for "The Life Style Center". A hotel with a clock on top will qualify . We are in for more and more surprises. Let's see how the P&Z people explain to us why this is good. It was approved 25 years ago. Why not??

"The Life Style Center".

They put an "f" in the above by mistake. All applications should be corrected.

"The Lie Style Center".
