Elected officials blogging anonymously

Here's an interesting article on elected officials who blog anonymously (Stamford Advocate, by Brian Lockhart).

For what it's worth, I have no doubt that several of Cheshire's elected officials blog here... both under their real name... and anonymously.

"I've counseled those thinking of participating in local blogs that they should do so under their own names or at least (use) a consistent handle," Wagner wrote on Yourct.com."

Well said. I've argued before for those who still wish to remain anonymous to at least use a consistent handle.

This will help the grown-ups (i.e. not the limerick poster). They will be able to direct their attention to the known posters w/ a deserved reputation.

Aside from that, I think there's a case to be made for individuals 'going public.' After all, it's undesirable to have position-holders that only retain their post because the public is unaware of their actual opinions or advocacy. On the other hand, I'd hate to see discussion trail-off for fear of a "slip-up."

I think the blog would be better-off if everyone selected a handle (or a name if willing to 'go public') and stayed with it. Wouldn't we have more outsider posts if folks realized that this is the place online to informally connect with officials?

People that choose to blog with a false name or signed anonymous really have no business and add no value to the blog. If you cannot say your thoughts and sign your name then you should not blog and you should not run for elected or appointed office.

I blog anomymously as I am an attorney with a state agency and don;t want to write out an elaborate disclaimer each time I express myself
