"Discretionary" funds

As I mentioned in yesterday's post "Amann's 'slush fund',"

The taxpayers' "slush fund" may also be called (Speaker of the House) Jim Amann's "discretionary fund."
And now upon review of the Herald's article in last week's edition about the turf (by Josh Morgan), I see:
The money, $525,000, comes as a result of efforts by State Rep. Mary Fritz (D–Cheshire/Wallingford). Fritz said she approached Speaker of the House James Amman about receiving money for field improvements through discretionary funds

This is so wrong in so many ways.
Mr. Amann may be a nice person but we all know he is out trying to win votes for his future run for govenor. This state cannot afford to have another crooked politician leading us.
He has been caught red handed using his powers to further his personal career as a fundraiser for the MS Society. Twisting arms so he can get more money from a charity organization.
We need to stop the slush funding now.

Makes no matter where or what account the funds come from. We a residents of this Town need to stand up and say no. If the funds are coming from a discretionary account then maybe, just maybe the funds should be used for energy efficiency work or infrastructure repair in the schools.

Tim you said you can't post email addresses for the TC or BoE so please contact them for us and ask that they each post on your blog using there names and state their opinions with reasons for whether or not to accept $525,000 for this turf project. I'm sure many are interested in hearing from them.

If the funds are coming from the State's "discretionary fund" then shouldn't it be up to our discretion on what to do with them? If they came from the State's environmental department for use in improving "parks/recreation" then I could see where they'd have to be used for area parks or fields if we chose to accept them.

Maybe our town lawyer can clarify.

Posting the emails of elected officials should, in no way, be a problem. They are elected, that means they work for the electorate, that means us, the public. If they do not want their names, emails, phones numbers published they should resign.

This is not an issue of debate.

It happens occasionally.

But you do raise an interesting point that's been on my mind... more on that later.

Tim, I wouldn't want it any other way. If they can't be open, honest, and candid then they shouldn't be in office.

The telephone numbers of your elected and appointed officials are available on the towns website. Tim has the link on his blog page. I believe most council members have their emails listed. If not they certainly did when they sought reelection so you may want dig up an old palmcard. Tim White shouldn't have to do all the work.
