Westfield & Packard concerns

Westfield is officially getting involved in Cheshire:

Subsidiaries of the multi-national Westfield Group, owners of the Westfield Meriden mall, filed a notice of intervention over a proposed 639,000 square foot retail and residential development that would be built in Cheshire's north end. (MRJ, by Leslie Hutchison)

And Packard is having some trouble finding tenants in east Waterbury:

A Massachusetts company with city approvals for a large shopping center off East Main Street by the Cheshire line is having some difficulty finding tenants for the planned 16 store sites, three restaurants and one bank. The issue could slow Packard Development Corp.'s construction, which was originally anticipated to begin this summer. Now, company representatives say they cannot make the full $40 million investment until enough tenants are found. (WRA)

Go Westfield!! Our town officials have no common sense maybe this is the best way to stop this fiasco. The only thing this mall is going to bring is a polluted river. Where are all the environmentalists who were so concerned about the truck stop being built. For some reason their quiet about this environmental disaster.

"...difficulty finding tenants for the planned 16 store sites..."

Likewise, W/S will site similar concerns here as a reason to invite previously off-limit big box stores. Of course, we won't hear a peep about that until the timing is right.

CSH has it right. Big Box stores are on the way and the Town Council and P&Z people that voted in lockstep for this mega sprawl can't say that it surprise them as they never bothered to think about Cheshire's future. The local boys are happy, they'll be building their apartments and in a few years converting them to condos.

The way the economy is going at this time. Why would anybody build anything????

100 hundred feet from the river and building a bridge over it. That will be great for the turtles.. Where is everyone on this issue?

"100 hundred feet from the river"

Not near the big pond. This is where they want to market restaurant space. They also want a walk that goes down to the pond. None of this is for the wildlife, it's about making more money. So, this part is probably going to be totally disturbed and landscaped.

The turtles will be provided with a video tape that instructs them on how to find the location of their newly created nesting area, identifies the areas they will be permitted to use and how to dodge traffic in the parking lots. The taxpayers will not have to pay for the video tape.

If the restaurants are that close to the river I hope they supply patrons with scuba gear when the flooding starts.

Can't wait for Cheshire Wood Turtle soup. Hmmmmm...

Are you sure the turtles will be able to understand the video? Would it be better just to move them. I am not sure the video is a good idea, what would happen to the TV if it rained? We should rethink the video.

Westfield is worried about the environmental disaster is Cheshire? They have developed every inch of the their site in Meriden. Did they worry about anything when they build it? Did they worry about the impact on downtown Meriden? Let's be clear they are only worring about the value of their property, they could careless about Cheshire.

Westfield bought that shopping center from some other corporation when it was failing. They did not build it and have done a decent job with what they started with.. I'm not a Westfield fan but they have a point.

From The Underground Town Hall

September 19th, 2007 by Cindy Kleist

Now many of you have contacted me on the “Underground” channels asking me to become a write-in candidate for the Town Council.

Well, as you know, I did attend the GOP caucus in August with the hopes that I would be nominated to run for the Town Council. Unfortunately, that never happened. When I attended the caucus, some people looked at me sort of funny. Actually to be honest, I felt out of place being there because I am a liberal person on many issues.

But one issue I am staunch about is accountability by government to the people and open and honesty. Many people are on the blog-website bandwagon now, but they have me to thank because frankly, I started all of this “awareness” several years ago when I ran shows about town issues on the Cox Public Access.

I called the Registrar of Voters and they told me I had to contact the Town Clerk’s office. But in order to be a write-in candidate, I have to be on the “ballot” so to speak and I believe I have until Oct. 23 to do this.

I will give this serious consideration over the weekend. I hope all of you will support me because as you know, I may speak my mind, but I am honest and fair.

I call it like it is and I discuss ALL issues, but I give praise and criticism when it is deserving. As I have said before on earlier posts, this will be a big undertaking and I am sure a lot of people connected to the town will be talking their mush, but that is how it is. Let’s get people in our Town Government that have a pulse and not act like the Night of the Living Dead please!!!

They added on to the mall and made it bigger, the entire site is now paved over, they are created an environmental disaster.

So if we allow this here we'll have two environmental disasters. As the saying goes "two wrongs don't make a right".
