GOP fundraiser

Marilyn and Joe Bartoli are holding a GOP fundraiser at their house (754 Devonwood Drive) on Tuesday from 5-7pm. Gov. Rell is expected to attend. I hope you consider attending.

For more info, call the Bartolis at 271-2497 or Steve Carroll at 272-9503.

Also, keep in mind that the Governor has called for a special session for this Wednesday... a special session on school construction bonding... and I believe the turf is included there. So you'd have an opportunity to speak directly with the Governor about the $850,000 for the turf and what it means to you.

Tim,
Are you still against the turf? Why do you want this money going out of Cheshire? You know it will!
Why be against the children of Cheshire. When was the last time you were on the field? Were you happy with its condition? Did you ever play a sport on the field? Do your children play sports? Its time for you to wake up!

I think Tim is for the turf. Its good for the enviorment and you are right the field has been a mess for years. My kids are not in the Cheshire school system but I still support it.

AG Blumenthal is concerned about the health risks. And so am I. I'll need to learn more.

Turf vs. Grass

Why grass is unhealthy for you:

People who smoke grass may feel relaxed and happy. But the bad news is that it causes many other problems that are not good for your health. It makes you less alert and takes you longer to react to things. Many people do not believe that it is addictive, but it actually is. Some other effects include:
·Memory loss
·Dehydration (feeling very thirsty)
·Problems with learning, thinking, and concentration
·Loss of coordination
·Anxiety, panic attacks, and paranoia (being overly scared or nervous about something)
·Hurts your immune system (makes it hard for you to fight illness)
·Increased appetite (want to eat more)
·Coughing
·Trouble breathing
·Heart and lung disease
·Cancer

The bottom line is that turf fields won’t cause any of these problems.

Anon 3:23 It's time for you to wake and read about the health hazards of synthetic turf. Instead of being concerned about only sports be more concerned about the health and wellbeing of our children. Money could be spent on the repair of the field with good old grass..

Yes there are some dangerous products we live with. I have READ that our furniture is dangerous because of the fabric protector, I have READ that our kitchen cabinets are dangerous because of the formaldehyde used in them. I have even READ that the carpet in our homes is dangerous. Have all of these been removed from our town buildings and schools? I want to get all of these out of my house. Tim can we schedule a bulk pick up for October?
When you wake up don't believe every thing you read. If you do I have a bridge I want sell you its in NY.

Tim:
This is a great project for not only the kids in Cheshire, but for the community. Every town that has one uses it for a variety of activities, not just sports. It adds a whole new demension to a recreational facility.

The facts on health risks are inconclusive. Most tests were done on European fields. Turf fields are proven safer than grass fields.

Tim,

Please pass along my support for artificial turf in Cheshire. Both the Youth and High School programs would benefit greatly.

Thanks for your time.

to all you negative people about health issues maybe we should all stop driving cars in town on TOWN roads. I beleive tires are made of rubber. Please, The turf is the answer for that CRAP field. It will cost more to fix and maintain.

With limitless maintenance, plentiful irrigation and, most importantly, limited play, grass would be fine. Unfortunately, we don't have any of the above.
Turf obviates the irrigation issue and minimizes maintenance. The real benefit, however, is that it results in an all all-weather/all season playing surface able to handle the repetitive, high impact activities that natural grass simply cannot withstand.

There is no doubt that turf benefits athletes and cheerleaders. However, a turf field will also have a positive impact on our nationally-ranked high school marching band (and related events like 'Music in Motion') and the ACS annual Relay for Life event. Everyone, not just athletes, wins with turf.

Everyone complains about rising taxes and state SPENDING, but as soon as the state offers up $850K for artificial turf at taxpayers expense, all the hands are out. Put your money where your mouth is - fund it PRIVETLY and plug yet one more hole in the crumbling dam.

Tim,

I hope you will please be a supporter for the turf. I think many other people have pointed out the benefits of not having grass...the alergies for one... but also the amount of time it takes to keep the grass maintained. Regardless of what you do, it still will get torn up. With many kids playing on the fields...it can't be helped.

When it rains, the field turns into a mud pit. It really makes it difficult for the kids to play on it. Talk about slip sliding away! It is an accident waiting to happen. Please support the turf!

instead of paying for new grass annually and the maintenance of such grass buy a turf field and once and for all be done with it!

Tim,
Thanks for providing a forum for the public to air their views on the turf. Although I have 3 kids, and don't expect that any of them will ever play a sport on the the high school field, I still think that the turf is a great idea for alot of reasons. From everything that I've heard, the maintenance costs are far less for a synthetic turf field than for natural grass, and the surface is more consistent, and, therefore, safer for the athletes. Drainage would be greatly improved, with fewer cancellations of events due to unplayable, muddy conditions. The field is used by a variety of sports and civic groups from all walks of life, all of whom would benefit from the turf. Many other towns similar in size and demographics to Cheshire have seen the wisdom of installing turf. Having such a field would be a source of great pride for the town and it's many citizens. I hope that you see the wisdom of this move and the many benefits that it brings for most of the town.

Tim,
I'm in support of the turf field at CHS. As stated in other blogs - there are many other usage for the turf (not just football and other sports). Relay for Life, Bands in Motion, HS Graduations, and many more.
It was stated "Great Pride for Our Town", I agree. I would also state Great Pride in our HS. We have one of the best HS bands in the country. How many times have we had Bands in Motion (Bands from throughout New England)marching on canvas tarp because of the sloppy field conditions. Same w/ Graduation - now if it rains in the morning, they can still have it outside, instead of inside the school.
Spring sports can start on time, this includes baseball and softball. Many colleges and HS use the field for practice until the grass fields are playable.
Again, these are some of the many usage for the turf.
I hope you would support the turf bonding for it's many uses, not just sports.

Tim,
Look around at other towns. They will all eventually install artificial turf. The benefits of artificial turf have already been posted. It's time to step into the twenty-first century.

Artificial turf lasts approx. 10-12 years. One person posting here claims, "just put in the turf and be done with it." Altieri said that replacement cost would be at least $300,000. Who will pay for that? The Board of Ed will get stuck with the cost of replacing the field after 10 or so years and the machine used to go over the turf after each event. I know you turf supporters don't care, but many Cheshire residents don't feel it's a necessity. Fund it yourself and pay the replacement costs yourself. The rest of the town is paying a half million each year just in coaches salaries. Seems we contribute plenty to the sports programs.

2:36 "the turf is the answer for that CRAP field."

The field we have is fine. What we need is a new coach.

Please extend our support for the proposed new turf at the high school. We believe that it would be a positive step for many sports programs in Cheshire, and it would look fantastic. We believe that many Cheshire fields around town could be vastly improved upon. This will be a great step in the right direction!
