Open forum 9/26

The Sox and Yanks have both clinched playoff berths... not yet sure though who will play where (Anaheim, Cleveland). The Sox' magic number is two.

The state Senate committee investigating Lou DeLuca should be wrapping it up soon (they have only 45 days)... and the Courant is calling on the Senate to give him the boot. I agree.

Ron Paul is running for President.

Reps. Fritz and Nardello are finally proposing legislation that seems to be a start at getting serious about home invasions. I haven't read the legislation, but at least they seem to be moving in the right direction (NHR, by Luther Turmelle)... and away from last week's vote against a special session to discuss measures getting tough on crime.

The Republican Town Committee meets tomorrow night. If you're interested in getting involved in the local campaign, stop by Town Hall at 7:30pm on Thursday. As for the DTC, I think they meet at the Senior Center, but I'm not sure what day.

Is W/S going to pay the cost of the peer study to review their engineering plans? They should and they should ask for a postponement of any decision it the peer review is not finished before the vote date.

When is Cheshire going to have an in depth review of W/S's impact study. It certainly looks like there major understatements of the costs to the town. This is not a project that will have any net benefit to the town. They are definitely lowballing the educational costs and probably all other costs to the town. These 160 rental units are 1500 sq ft, larger than a 6 room ranch. Limiting them to two bedrooms is a joke as other rooms can be used for bedrooms. Wake up Cheshire, they are selling the school system and we will get stuck with huge educational costs.

How could they come up with any figures? The last P&Z meeting was unreal, Lou indicated that much of the development was unknown, and now doesn't know if 160 units would all be apartments, or possibly some townhouses. If they put townhouses in, there would have to be very few as townhouses require too much land. Apartments can be stacked right up, 3 to 4 stories or even higer. Would you want to buy a townhouse near all these apartments? If you didn't have kids, would you rent or buy here?

Ron Paul is absolutely the wrong man to lead a great nation. If your view of our country is inward and second tear he may be well positioned to take us there.
We will have enough problems navigating a dangerous world anyway. Putting our heads in the sand covers the brain and exposes our tails...not in our best interest at all.

Making home invasion as a more serious felony, and requiring those convicted of it to serve 85% of their sentence before being eligible for parole, are steps in the right direction.

But the people still demand a mandatory 3-Strikes law to keep repeat violent criminals locked up.

Like James Biggs who's been in and out of Conn. prisons his whole life for multiple kidnappings, robberies, sexual assaults and other crimes.

He was released again on Aug. 30 and promptly committed armed carjacking and assault on a police officer, causing Gov. Rell to suspend all paroles of violent criminals.

Why do these liberal legislators and "criminologists" insist on unleashing these habitual thugs upon us by resisting 3-Strikes? These lifelong criminals are not going to change.

And I'd ask Reps. Nardello and Fritz to explain, why should only those convicted of home invasion have to serve 85% of their sentence? Why not ALL criminals convicted of ANY kind of violent crime?

When is Cheshire going to have an in depth review of W/S's impact study?

All the costs to the state taxpayers should also be included. Any state money to reengineer and rebuild the exit ramp, highway widening, sewer extension costs, sewer plant expansion, sewage pump station on the site, bring electric and gas to the development and any other costs to the taxpayer.

I look outward, but with trade, not force.

"Putting our heads in the sand"

Ron Paul was one of the very few Republicans (Flake and Shadegg also come to mind) who consistently fought the spending binge that's been going on for the past seven years. And he openly talks about the $60,000,000,000,000 in unfunded liabilities. I'd say it's most of the rest of the DC Republicans (and Democrats) who have been burying their head in the sand.

I was shocked that Mr Schrumm said that it would be fine to have the towns finance people review the impact study by W/S at the last council meeting. They might fine at running the towns finances but determining the impact of this huge development is beyond their scope with all due respect. I believe that we should spend the money and have this done by a third party ASAP. No decision should be made by P&Z until this is done no matter what Mr Fazzone keeps telling us the decision date is. Many residents asked for this at prior meetings and they deserve a fair and unbiased study.

Who cares what David Schrumm had to say. He is leaving the council to run the Ives Farm. I hope he is a better farmer than a councilman.

Tim:

This is your comment on Feb 15.

Nonetheless, before PZC approves anything, they should get an impact study from the developer. I believe that study will include an analysis comparing their proposed housing to similar housing in Cheshire (number of bedrooms,
square feet type-of-thing). That impact study should give a fair idea on how many kids we could expect if the proposal is approved.
-----------------------------------Well we didn't get an impact study before P&Z approved the text change to The Town Plan of Conservation and Development or before P&Z approved the Zone Change.

Now W/S has presented their impact study which is very suspect and definitely requires a detailed
peer review. When is P&Z going to think about the interests of the taxpayers instead of the those of the developer.

The possible number of children in the 1500 sq ft apartments can not be minimized by saying the apartments will only have 2 bedroom. The developer has minimized the impact on the educational costs by forcasting a low number of children. They are cashing in by selling the Cheshire school system and they know it. We need realistic estimates not misleading estimates made by Michael Ecke's brother.

"the towns finance people review the impact study by W/S"

I don't think they don't have the time to do it justice, are qualified for this type of proposal and even if they were, I would not trust the outcome as they report to Milone who is strongly biased for the development.

Anonymous said...

Who cares? Your here don't let anyone else in. WHAT I REALLY HOPE IS THAT W/S'S PROJECT IS REJECTED AND SOMEONE, WITH THE STATE'S BLESSING, BUILDS 2,000 AFFORDABLE UNITS ON THE SITE. THAT WOULD BE GREAT!!!!

Anonymous said...

The fscal impact study to be submitted by WS cannot be the lone determinant for a denial. A land use agency is not allowed to deny or approve an application based on a projects fiscal impact.

A decision up or down on that condition would be reversed on an appeal. That is not to say a commissioner couldn't be weighing all of this in their decision making process. They must simply have a different stated reason or state no reason at all.

The town should have the benefit of fiscal impact study so it can be fully prepared for that sunny or rainy day that is just over the horizon.

Dave Schrumm is a pretty good home farmer. I have had many a fine squash or tomato from his productive garden. He saves money on his grocery bill too by doing a little extra work around the house. It is a real pleasure to see people who actually practice what they preach. The sad part is that dolts like anon 7:10 AM don't know Dave or would ever think through what he says. He ain't perfect but he is your friend when it comes to seeking the best value for your tax dollars. When you sum Schrumm up you sadly mistake his desire to keep taxes low as his desire to keep his taxes low. It's about all of us...not him or you.

In the interest of full disclosure. Dave is a friend. I know he won't be running Ives Farm. Tim Casey runs Ives Farm and he is doing just fine.

Dave is not running bc he knows he has been a failure at the council
His principled ideas have and will cost the town money not saved
the dems actually brought forward two budgets that were lower and more efficient than the schrumm budgets
schrumm thought that the dems would give the money away
they did not
lin trail?
schrumm wanted to spend almost a million on that
save money?/
get real

Anon 8:07 You are right on as far as the vote goes. The horse is out of the barn. The courts will decide what goes in if we screw up something. That is sad since we had the control before we changed everything. It would be nice now to know what the impact is on our town and stop the BS that W/S is producing. We can't stop the developers but we need to know what the real costs are so we can plan for them in the future since it will come out of our pockets. One million or two million per year is peanuts for a return on a development of this size.

Anon 9:02 The DEMS did not have to deal with the revalution storm the last two years. Think about if the budget was not questioned during those years what the budget would be today. It would have compounded like bank interest. You should follow the budget process more closely before you give credit to the DEMS. Why do we have a surplus of over Two million dollars? We have been overtaxed the last two years with the DEMS in the majority. Time for a change.

Christopher Columbus looked outward for trade too but he took some weapons along just in case.

Its great to think noble but there are no noble fools.

As for waste in spending by Congress both D&R you're right on the mark.

Friday, September 28, 2007 10:14:00 PM... I think this discussion on Iraq is a bit simplistic. I recognize that there are many considerations.

Anonymous said...

your presidential candidate is the most simplistic. ...he's out of the don't fix the roof if it costs money approach to foreign policy

Anonymous said...

The problem with EVERYTHING is that we have "the worst president in history" still in office. It doesn't make any difference who wins the next election D or R that person is going to have to clean up a huge mess. The Dems have the advantage because the majority of Americans know Iraq was a huge mistake and they want out ASAP.

Anonymous said...

I agree Bush is incapable of defending himself, but are you seriously suggesting we are in worse shape now than when Carter left office in 1980?

The Shah replaced by the Ayatollah?
Soviets in Afghanistan?
Solidarity being crushed?
21% interest rates?
14% inflation
rising unemployment?

The GOP problem is there is a whole generation out there who were not alive to experience unbounded Democrat control of the federal government

Anonymous said...

It's now election time and it's our time to vote against the people that chose the developers' interests over those of the Cheshire residents.

The Dems like to spend and really like to support the developers and the developers just love and suport the Dems. The Dems pushed hard to give the developers everything they wanted. The developers wrote the text changes to the Town Plan of Conservation and Development and the Northend Zone change exactly as they wanted.

Wait and see, not only will the NE have residential, but every existing commercial zone, you'll have to wait until after the election and maybe until just after the W/S development plan is approved to find out more of the what the developers would like to do to Cheshire in the NE and the rest of the commercial zones.

Get ready folks for the tax increases to pay for all those educational costs that will result from the Dems gift to the developers.

And, just remember that the Dems who voted for this giveaway knew exactly what the consequence to Chehire would be. They were warned over and over and chose not to listen. They didn't question, they just approved. They voted without any real information and they will do the same to approve the W/S deveopment plan. The Dems are owned by the developers.

Wait and see not only the NE will have residential, but every existing commercial zone. The selling for profit of the Cheshire schools has begun.

4:09PM You seem to forget when Clinton left office we had a sizable surplus now we have a record deficit. Since Bush has taken office everything has gone down hill FAST.

Anonymous said...

Last I looked the republicans on the p and z voted for this too. At least 3 of them did, Only one rep and one dem did.
get your facts straight dave
by the way what are you gong to do with all the time you will have on your hands
Maybe find something to do worthwhile

Anonymous said...

I was comparing Bush to Carter, not Clinton.

Bubba had a lot of help from Newt Gingrich, Alan Greenspan and Bill Gates. His fiscal record 1993-94 was repudiated by the voters. Thankfully, against his will, the GOP congress took away his checkbook

By the way, with the dot com boom busting in '01-- even without 9/11 or tax relief the budget was going to go into the red....which is what state budgets all did that year

Hey Justin, seems your overlooking the fact that the Dems are the majority on the Council and P&Z.

Matt Hall and Patty Flynn-Harris did their jobs well for the developers. You can see the Bowman's really support them, check the campaign signs at the corner of W.Main and Maple, the offices of Paul Bowman's Diversified Builders.

A big thanks to Matt and Patty.

Heard from a realtor that some of the stores at Canton are not doing so good and that Kohls and Shaws may be looking to jump ship. Needs checking out.

Anonymous said...

11:20PM What about Marty Coburn, he was pushing this big time. This from the guy who was so concerned a few years ago about store size. Changed his tune didn't he (wonder why?)

Anonymous said...

Marty Coburn was pushing the better than Fazzone and W/S's project manager Curley. If he wanted it so much, he should have moved to Canton.

He certainly didn't represent Cheshire or try to protect our town. The whole time he pushed for less restrictions and more generalizations. Can't wait to see him off this commission.

Anonymous said...

Coburn talks progressive but he is always in favor of screwing the little guy to help the developer. He was the point man in Fiske's effort to pawn off his decrepit dam in Strathmore on the unwilling neighbors

Anonymous said...

You may be sorry to hear but you have pontificating Marty Cobern another 5 years unless he quits.

Unless he quits. He may resign and run for another office. Help! Help!
