Council mtg 4/24

In case you missed it, we had a Council meeting tonight. Sorry I didn't post the agenda ahead of time. I know I've been getting into the habit of posting it before meetings, but... between the full weekend wedding and me coming down with a cold on Sunday... I've been behind and simply forgot. Anyway...

First up was Kathy Nankin of the Human Services Committee, discussing their Alcohol Awareness forum (scheduled for this Thursday evening in Town Hall). She gave an update on current happenings outside the forum and gave all Council members this pin (see inset image) that's intended to symbolize the campaign to stop underage drinking. For more info, visit the Cheshire Cares website.

Second came Nina Vianese, representing the Kids in Motion group. They made a request for the town to provide funding for their project. Their budget calls for $350,000. And they've raised $208,000, including the $100,000 from the state that was recently announced by Sen. Gaffey.

Third was Rich Kaplan, representing CYB. Basically, he just gave us an update on the legal status of the proposed ballfield complex being considered by CYB and the Town.

And lastly came the Library and some info on their "One Book, One Town" program. This year the chosen book is When the Emperor Was Divine.

Town Council, 4th District

Re: CYB. Did I hear they're writing the lease? This is a win win for town as was repeated several dozen times but they're steering the boat. What is going on? Why isn't the town writing the lease? It's our land. Before anyone gets the wrong impression, I support youth sports.

Was there any report on the pool?? I didn't hear anything mentioned during the time I tuned in. Why isn't the consultant's report ready yet?

Kids in Motion is a nice project as was Playground in the Park which was built in 1992. At the time, it was 100% in accordance with the ADA guidelines. I believe Playground in the Park raised 100% of its funds. Kids in Motion should do the same--it's a nice to have--not a need to have. The current playground may need some renovation and maintenance but it is still very handicapped accessible. Quite a bit of renovation and additions to the current playground could be done--such as the addition of a slide safe for cochlear implants--with the money already raised. I wish them well.

I take offense the lease negotiations are being done in private. This land belongs to the Town and the specifics of the lease should be made public. Who pays for what, what are costs, what are payments, what happens if either side wants to cancel. To hide behind weak legalities based on common contract discussions is even weaker.

How can we support any program about underage drinking when the signboard at the high school lists beer tasting as a fund raiser. Get real!

anon7:53 What if they run out of funds? Would the town now have to buy and maintain the fields? I would not enter into a lease agreement if the leasee has no assets except my land. Huh?

More CAVE men talk here-what if the sky was falling. Let's get the baseball field done, it won't cost the town a dime and all you neo-cons can talk about private/public funding. Now stop yer bitching

"it won't cost the town a dime"

Kids in Motion said that.

The idea of using Town funds to complete a private project could lead into some issue in the future. What about all other civic groups, will they not want their "share" of public money for their cause. It was sold as not cost to the town, just like the pool was sold as a breakeven deal. Let Kids in Motion take out a low interest loan and pay it back based on fund raising programs. If CYB can pony up 2 mil for the ball fields, is it not logical that Kids in Motion can find their money? We subsidize the pool and that is an operational expense. The playground is a capital expense, paid for through the capital budget process. Maybe the town can loan the money and have KIM pay it back over 20 years with interest.

Your town isn't to wide I'm afraid. KIM ok. Turf no. Nobody talks about injuries caused by TURF.

The mines we have in town are not gold the last I heard. Let's do what we need to do first(fix our pool, present ball fields and Mixville).Other projects will happen but we need to be a little patient. We,the adults should not be like little children who want everything NOW and it has to be new. Good things come to those that wait.

10:50PM - Townwide support? Not from what I see and hear. Try again!
