I lost

But I'd like to congratulate my opponent, Vickie Orsini Nardello. And thanks to all of my family and friends who gave me so much support.

Quick analysis... the "globals" in this election outpaced the ability of probably just about any Republican challenger. I don't have the exact totals, but I lost by about 5200 to 4300 votes. Please... opine!

This 89th District constituent is very disappointed at this candidate's loss to Democrat Vickie Nardello. The incumbent visited my home prior to the election and I had the chance to query her on her stance concerning illegal immigration. Astonishingly, she did not seem to be very in tune with the problem, and seemed unprepared and/or unwilling to confront it. I was shocked at her suggestion that "it would probably be too expensive to pursue all of the illegal aliens and prosecute them."

Tim White, on the other hand, impressed me when he voiced his sympathy to the plight of deserving U.S. citizens who are increasingly subject to the loss of job opportunities and a host of societal benefits that have long been available to deserving citizens of these great United States, rather than to undeserving citizens of other countries.

Vickie Nardello's stance, such as it was, seemed to be that the illegal immigration issue is not important to Connecticut citizens because "...Connecticut is not a border state."

In fact, every state has borders, thus every state is a border state. The illegal aliens being employed illicitly in Connecticut didn't fall from the sky. They crossed our border, on foot or by motor vehicle, to get here. More to the point, they crossed many a border illegally (national and state) to get to Connecticut and compete for local jobs. They compete for the kind of job vacancies that certain of our disadvantaged state residents desperately need. When it comes to need, in all manner of respects, citizens should come first, instead of being crowded out of employment opportunities and social services by the ever-growing number of illegal aliens (who are citizens of other countries). In the face of unrestricted illegal immigration, what are our disadvantaged Connecticut citizens to do? Vickie Nardello has no plan. What's worse, she seems to harbor very little concern about it.

I met Tim White for the first time at the intersection of Routes 68 and 69 a little over a week ago. He stood alone in the rain at the intersection, waving to 89th District constituents as they drove past. I decided to stop and meet him. I'm glad I did.

I am still of the opinion that Tim White would have served us better in this and many other regards in Hartford. I hope to see him run again when the incumbent's seat is next subject to a vote. He'll have my vote next time as well.

Truly,
Jim Tomlinson

You did a nice job in a very difficult year.

Any time I get the chance to speak with Tim I am impressed. Vickie is out of touch with the people and I believe it was really time for a change. Good job Tim, if nothing else, your hard work campaigning made Vickie pay attention to the issues and not just "coast" to another victory.

So disappointed about your loss Tim. You had our support!

Great job Tim,,,keep up the fine work. You have and will continue to have our support.

It is a huge loss for the 89th district that Tim was not elected. I hope he continues his good work on the TC and runs again next time.

I feel in general that many people voted democratic simply because of the war in Iraq. I guess they think we should bail out of Iraq and leave the work of our outstanding troops unfinished. I guess they don't want to support out troops or help the Iraqi people anymore. What message does that send to our troops? Perhaps all those war protestors who want us out of Iraq should, along with the democrats they elected for no other reason than to retaliate against republicans, should all be sent to Iraq to help the troops expedite the Iraqi training/rebuilding process so that the troops can come home. Yeah right, as if they would!

Tim,

Did you every think you lost cause of your negative campaign?
As far as the illegal immigration and them taking these great jobs for the disadvantaged you so worry about, I seem to recall you need to show 2 or 3 forms of ID to secure any real job (not under the table) and therefore these "illegals" are not able to produce the proper documents and hence cannot steal these jobs.....what have you done to fight the immigration cause Mr. T?

The last poster is completely wrong in accusing Tim of "negative campaigning." Tim focused on ISSUES only, not personalities. He factually presented his opponent's voting record and outlined his disagreements on issues. That is NOT "negative campaigning"; that's what elections are about.

BTW, Ms. Nardello couldn't deny the factual accuracies of her record. All she could do was accuse Tim of "negative campaigning."

As for illegal aliens: even if they are not taking the better jobs from American citizens, the previous poster neglects to mention the hundreds of billions of federal, state, town, and private dollars spent in social welfare and other costs (schools, healthcare, crime, uninsured/unlicensed drivers, etc).

Either we pick and choose whom we invite to live in our home, or we have open borders and become the homeless shelter of the world. Being the world's homeless shelter was OK a hundred years ago, but would be an economic and social disaster today.

Victory... in my campaign, what was negative?

As for my concerns with illegal immigrants, I simply don't see why money would be spent on the tertiary education of illegal immigrants... when primary education for our kids is underfunded (ECS).

And to everyone for all your kind words, thank you. Thanks so much. I really do appreciate your support.

Tim: I've been seeing you every morning, at least through the month of October, standing on corners along Route 10, waving and smiling. It's on my way to work, and I always honk -- I'm the bald guy in the suit driving a dark gray vehicle. I saw you and honked again this morning (11/9).

I want to congratulate you on a well-fought and well-run campaign. Since I live in North Haven, I was unable to vote for you, but my parents live in Bethany. I remember my mom telling me that you had come to the house, on the trail, and she was overly impressed with you and your stance on the issues. She's not easy to please. You secured her vote, my father's, and many of their acquaintances in Bethany.

Any candidate willing to stand on corners every morning, in the rain, wind and/or bitter cold has my vote and this dedication transcends ALL party lines. I am a registered Democrat but consider myself more of a 'moderate.' Had I lived in the 89th District, you would have had my vote and support, if only because of your dedication to the campaign. Other candidates would do well to take a lesson from you -- dedicate yourself entirely to the campaign; use unconventional methods (blogging, corner-standing, etc.) as well as conventional methods (door-to-door meet and greets), and always smile.

I'm going to miss seeing you on my way to work in the morning -- I had come to look forward to the commute, anticipating which corner I might see you standing on. I wish you all the best. Because of your dedication, you helped to restore one man's faith in politics. Thanks for everything.

I am a Republican that voted for Tim but against Nancy Johnson---and it killed me to vote for Murphy--I voted against Johnson due to her belief that we should keep Rumsfeld...period...we need people who arent yes men or women...I dont want to cut and run, just the opposite...but we need people running the show who are willing to listen to other views and not have a "my way or the highway" attitude al a Rumsfeld...so anon 3:30, its fellow republicans like you who have the attitude that you cant question the administration that is the problem...I grew up on military bases, my brother just came back from Afghanistan and if my country started a draft i would go tomorrow...and yes I voted for a Democrate....AND YES I AM A PATRIOT

Tim,

You ran a great campaign, I was terribly disappointed you lost., As for the negative campaign comments made previuosly, I am not sure how poiting otu the facts of Ms. Nardello's voting record was negative.

Its amazing how the Democrats in this state are complaining about the Governor when the legislature is controlled buy their party. Ultimately any legislation has to come from them. Just like the Federal Government, its the legislature which truly controls what does and doesnt happen. President's and Governor can only attempt to guide and influence policy decisions, they cant pass laws and policy unless it is placed in there hands for signature.

the negatives-you collected a whole bunch of money from the Dentists and then you did some real negative mailings. I think when this comes out it will hurt you Tim-sorry but the truth is that Vickie did a good job of staying above the muck-you threw it and like Nancy Johnson it flew back at you.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 652 still doesn't prove that Tim White engaged in "negative campaigning." Tim's mailers never sank to the level of Nancy Johnson's. He limited himself to a factual outline of Vickie's record on ISSUES and his differences with her.

Regarding the dentists' support for Tim: this only points to Vickie's own special intertest agenda -- her pushing to let dental hygeniests practice general dentistry. The dentists supported Tim for good reasons of public safety. Too bad this issue never came out fully to the voters.

breachway 12:04...I never said that people shouldn't question the administration. But with all the "Bush bashing" that went on, I never heard any reasonable alternatives. All I heard was that we need to bring the troops home. Obviously bringing the troops home is the adm.'s goal but they also can't cut and run.
It's too bad that all along, the news reporters never reported the situation in Iraq accurately. They mostly only reported the negative, and having had my own family members in Iraq more than once, there was a lot of good things going on that you just didn't hear about.
Guess we'll have to see how much better things get.

Tim's energy mailer was a blatant lie, the bill, and the amendment I'm assuming he was referencing, never came to a vote.

Anon, you obviously have soem sort of personal agenfa against Tim. At least have the courtesy to represent it by npt representing yourself anonymously.

Also, i find it pretty laughable consdering, Vicki claims to have done so much for Cheshire residents, yest all we have seen as the result of state mandates and lack of funding is increased property taxes, greater burder on middle income families and declining services. Yes she has done a wonderful job as has the rest of the democratically controlled CT legislature.

Anon 1:23, as one of the other bloggers pointed out, it's clear that you have a personal issue with Tim. I know Tim quite well and to suggest that he is a liar is absolutely absurd. He's one of the most honest people I know. No part of his campaign was dishonest. He dealt with the issues, pure and simple. It's unfortunate that Vickie and her cronies have to accuse him of negative campaigning because she can't defend her voting record.

If anyone wants to go onto cga.ct.gov, look up HB 5689, and let me know where to find where Vickie "voted against lower electric costs", let me know and I'll take it all back, because right now it certainly looks to me that nothing of the sort happened.

Anonymous said...

anon 2:26...

"So I would very much say that unfortunately, and with great difficulty, I will have to vote against this because I do believe that further on in this particular Session, we are going to get the opportunity to address this issue"

Sounds to me like Tim was correct. And as for Rep Nardello's desire for "comprehensive reform", what happened during the 2006 Session on electric rates? Nothing.

So what was the point in refusing to compromise?

Anonymous said...

Did Rep. Nardello actually vote against a measure to lower electric bills for consumers?

The last two posters dispute this, so I went to the General Assembly website myself (cga.ct.gov). Here's what I found.

Rep. Nardello did, in fact, vote against a proposed amendment to HB 5689 that would have reduced taxes on electric bills from 6.8% to 4% for residences, and from 8.5% to 5% for businesses.

The proposed amendment was LCO 3769 offered by Rep. Ward. While no roll call vote was taken on this amendment (it was defeated by voice vote), we know that Rep. Nardello opposed it because she said so on the floor of the House:

Rep. Nardello:
"...I will have to vote against this because I do believe that further on in this particular Session, we are going to get the opportunity to address this issue, other issues that will turn the ship around, as I would put it, going forward and change things for our businesses and for our residential customers."
(cga.ct.gov -- House -- Transcripts -- April 11, 2006).

So while Tim's technical citation was in error (she actually voted against an AMENDMENT to HB 5689, then voted for the unamended bill), the substance of Tim's mailer was 100@ ACCURATE: Rep. Nardello, in fact, "voted against lowering electric costs."

PS: It's interesting that her defenders don't dispute the factual accuracy of all her other votes cited by Tim -- her votes for a 13% state spending increase, for raising state income and sales taxes, against returning $466,000 to the three towns, for giving discounted tuiotion rates to illegal aliens, against exempting seniors' pensions from income tax, etc. etc.

Redtown... thank you. Despite what Anon 1:23 seems to think, I would never knowingly lie or mislead anyone.
