Rite Aid development moving forward

From the NHRs Luther Turmelle:

A Middletown developer has taken out a $4.4 million loan with Liberty Bank so it can begin building a nearly 15,000-square-foot drugstore at West Main Street, Maple Avenue and Main Street.

It sure beats what's there now. It will change that whole area.

Just what we need, another box store.

As long as it fits into the zoning regs, it's allowed, like it or not. It's not government's role to decide we already have enough drug stores. Besides, it will replace an eyesore that has been there for many years.

Eyesore? That building was a central stop for many of the residents of this town in the mid century. Maybe you have not been told any stories about that plaza because you have been too busy unpacking.

Town government should have a say over what businesses can move into town. 5 large pharmacies in town are too much. 1 is going to close and we are going to have a big empty building that nobody wants or can use.

I unpacked here about 45 years ago and am quite familiar with the Plaza Block. It still was an eyesore!

And under what legal authority are we to decide when we have enough of what type of store? Do we have too many pizza places yet? Are you going to write the rules that ultimately get overturned by a court? Ever hear of the free market? And what about the additional property taxes that a new building and business fixtures generates?

- so was the old cinema. Life moves on....

Life moves on but it should move in the right direction. We have many pizza places which in turn creates the need for more drug stores to keep us alive. Hey I'm saving gas. The new one is closer to my house. The right direction I guess?

Zoning? How about the amount of time that the plaza was left a mess. How about a blight ordinance and fines??

The buildings there had character and did get run down--and yes the old Theater had character too. Rite Aid's stock is $.31 a share; they are building all over the place and will go bankrupt or get bought out. Wonder where the churchgoers will park!! The whole Stop & Shop complex--including the new Rite Aid, to me is an EYESORE. I have lived in Cheshire since 1958 & do ALL of our shopping on Route 5 in Wallingford..prices are MUCH cheaper

The nearby town's Post office is a disgrace. It is simply a giant rat hole. Too bad we can't get a new post office instead of yet another drug store.

RE: Post Office Meriden has a brand new UNOCCUPIED Post Office becuase the USPS does not have enough $$ to MOVE them out of the old & into the new digs....

Yes, that awful existing building is an eyesore. It's ugly, rundown and the shack on the very end of the building is leaning to one side. Apparently, the owner didn't consider upkeep a priority.

The existing rat's nest represents the skidmark that is the underwear of Cheshire...but the pool represents the hemorrohoid of Cheshire...and folks wonder why we have so many drug stores.

Yea we need a new post office....for what? you go in, you drop your mail and you leave...I agree the parking is tight but a new building? what so it can be trendy like our new pool was? like the turf will be? like the north end lifestyle place will be?

The only serious question is if the mackerel snappers will not be allowed to use the parking lot on Wednesdays, Sundays and other special days. How will Rite-Aid be viewed if they restrict the parking for the patrons of the Church

Anyone know what the post office pays in rent at the current piece of junk building? Could it be anywhere near about $10,000 per month? Pretty steep for such a piece of junk. You think they could at least mop the floors and repair the front entrance for what is paid in rent.

If Rite Aid is going to let the church people fill up their parking lot, then I guess I'm not going to Rite Aid.
