The ongoing story of the post office relocation

From the NHRs Luther Turmelle:

The U.S. Postal Service has been paying a local landowner $40,000 a year since 2006 for a 2.4-acre tract on Highland Avenue that the agency now says it can no longer afford to build a post office on.

Regional spokeswoman Maureen Marion said the Postal Service signed a 25-year lease with Marshall Fisco, who owns the land at 1227 Highland Ave. The deal with Fisco does not include any provisions for paying a penalty to break the lease, although Marion said it allows the Postal Service to sublet the property.

“At the time we signed the lease, we had every intention of moving forward with this,” Marion said of plans to build a post office on the site. “But now conditions are such that new construction is out of the question.”

Great use of our tax dollars. Sign a lease with no way out. Did the landlord provide the lawyer?

Remember, these are the people who want to control your health care

Good thing our congressman Chris Murphy was right on top of this one. He's such an asset to Cheshire. How long before he moves elsewhere?

the state of ct RENTS all of its buildings. most of the owners are republican judges. remember these are the people that sold your jobs overseas.

First 3 comments most snarky, however not much help relative to the problem. This postal fiasco began several years ago and the real question is whether or not the front steps to the Post Office and the rest of the disgraceful looking building will collapse before they find a new location for it.

What's snarky about suggesting our Congressman should have been doing something about this problem?

Oh, my bad. He's too busy running errands for Nancy Pelosi to worry about his own alleged home town. Then again, maybe Wethersfield got a new Post Office.

Amazingly, the Feds have enough money to give the north end land owner $40,000 per year for an empty lot. The Feds seem to also have enough money to give the landlords who own the dump on Maple Ave about $10,000 per MONTH in rent. That comes to a total of close to $200,000 per year in town for rent. rent on a vacant lot and rent on a dump. All in the name of service to the citizens of this nation.

The Feds do not have enough money to build this very busy town a real, Post Office with real parking, real front steps, and real service counters however.

Just don't forget the Feds bringing us all the expenses for a broken down dump of a PO could also be providing all of our federalized medical care soon too.

"Since its reorganization into an independent organization, the USPS has become self-sufficient and has not directly received taxpayer-dollars since the early 1980s."

So why is there a Post Office Committee in Congress?

The USPS is the template for all these "private" businesses that are now de facto federal entities---GM, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG---all money pits.

Sell them all to the private sector

Just look at the USPS In MERIDEN--brand NEW building sitting there BUT the USPS has NO MONEY to spend to move the contents from the old location to the new location!!!!!

Meriden's in Murphy's district, too. Guess he's too busy raising $$$ from bailed out bankers to pay attention to his own district
