Open forum 11/24

Elim Park is having their annual Christmas open house on Dec 1... and coincidentally, they're also hiring nurses, if you know anyone who might be interested.

The WRA is comparing the battle over Cheshire's ND to Blue Back Square in West Hartford... and there's even petitions floating around opposing the residential and retail components. For me, I'm still wondering what the residential's secondary impact will be on the town.

Everybodys' annual Christmas giveaway should be coming up soon... two weeks maybe? I know it's usually a Saturday night with doors opening at 6:30pm.

Most of the town's elected officials will be taking their oath of office on Sunday Dec 2 in town hall... it should be open to the public... for anyone who is interested.

A recent NHR article (by Luther Turmelle) provided some really useful information. It mentioned several companies that are now offering electricity to households in a competitive market... finally! It only took ten years! Anyway, with skyhigh electric prices I figured you might be interested. Unfortunately, the article is more than a week old and I can't find a handy link (perhaps because the NHR just changed the website). Nonetheless, I think Luther mentioned both Direct Energy and ConEd as suppliers.

If you're in need of a gift this season, but don't know what to get... you just know you want to spend money in town... the Chamber of Commerce offers gift certificates. I usually buy some myself because you can use them at plenty of places around town.

What else is happening?

Cheshire's answer to global warming.

While many places have started reforestation programs or just pant a tree. Cheshire if they approve the NE mall will eliminate this open space parcel that support so many wildlife forms and chainsaw the trees and cover it with over 37 acres of asphalt parking and roofing, thus converting this possible jewel to a sea of national chains stores and national chain restaurants. What a great legacy.

Is Thbis mall really need? The Meriden mall is 4.5 miles away and at 60 miles an hour or 1 mile a minute, it is a mere 4.5 minuites from this proposed mall.

Wallingford route 5 is 5.5 miles from town hall and closer for many Cheshire residents than the proposed mall.

Behind all the glossy videos, brochures, never ending presentations are the real facts, costs and the real net to the town and state taxpayers. If this is approved, it will not be a tax positive and a few years the same people that were for it will be complaining the negatives that are being hidden, just like the pool.

Problem is if there is no development allowed on this "jewel" the developers will sue to have the town pay for it

The "highest and best use" of property at an off-ramp off an Interstate might not be 37 acres of pavement; but it sure ain;t a nature preserve

The state should buy it and save 10's of millions of dollars and at the same time prevent turning 691 and route 10 into parking lots.

and what do you think the state would do with the land....it would be a magnet for other communtities dumping unwanted land uses on it (transfer stations; jails; low income housing et al)

Face it. The property is adjacent to major highways. The sooner it is developed with a less offensive land use the sooner we can stop worrying about more offensive land uses

It's no fun not having david Schrumm to kick around anymore, is it?

Hope you enjoy the new GOP majority on P&Z

This may or may not be true... I don't know. However, I think it's worth pointing out that the state already owns land in the northeast quadrant of the IC.

does that land have direct access to an interstate off-ramp? Is the state using it for another purpose already?

It's a parking lot...

If you want everything developed, go to Waterbury, Meriden or New Haven. Isn't it amazing that they have so much more development than we and their taxes are higher.

So, if you want the development and are against the natural environment, give us a break and move. Open space makes a town liveable.

Write your council person and P&Z and tell them we want a nice town to live in. We don't need any more malls and especially not in Cheshire.

I believe the state owns the parking lot and some additional adjacent land in the northeast quadrant. Does anyone know for sure?

Hartford, New Haven & Waterbury were heavily developed with low price housing.

There are plenty of malls in Orange and Farmington. Traffic congestion yes, but solid schools and high property values

The State owns 75 acres in the NE quadrant, which it purchased to build an emergency management center, which may or may not ever happen.

It could be a nature preserve. You should see it from inside. You would be amazed. You don't even hear 691. It funny how nature works...

has it occurred to the tree huggers that leaving property adjacent to an interstate ramp undeveloped might be consistent with the state's anemic job growth over the past two decades?

I'm sure some of us can clip coupons and complain about global warming while everything made in our house is made in countries that will never ratify Kyoto....but maybe the rest of us need to earn a living around here...and will move elsewhere if we can't

Anonymous said...

Ther are 3 other areas that can be developed. How is that hugging trees? Three out of four is not bad and there is no river running in the other areas. I believe there is a "FOR SALE" sign on one area and it would be better suited for this type of proposal etc, etc. Hmmm the price?????

There needs to be more peace and harmony in our town It goes along way to be nice to eachother and to say a friendly "hello" to a stranger. Make sure that when you attend any town function you are extra nice to all around you!
Take the extra step to shake hands with people you have never spoken to before. Remember the song

WHEN I WAS JUST A LITTLE GIRL I ASKED MY MOTHER WHAT WILL I BE
WILL I BE PRETTY WILL I BE RICH HERE'S WHAT SHE SAID TO ME
QUE SERA SERA WHATEVER WILL BE WILL BE
THE FUTURE'S NOT OURS TO SEE QUE SERA SERA
QUE SERA SERA WHATEVER WILL BE WILL BE
THE FUTURE'S NOT OURS TO SEE QUE SERA SERA
WHEN I GREW UP AND FELL IN LOVE I ASKED MY SWEETHEART WHAT LIES AHEAD
WILL WE HAVE RAINBOWS DAY AFTER DAYHERE'S WHAT MY SWEETHEART SAID
QUE SERA SERA WHATEVER WILL BE WILL BE
THE FUTURE'S NOT OURS TO SEE QUE SERA SERA
QUE SERA SERA WHATEVER WILL BE WILL BE
THE FUTURE'S NOT OURS TO SEE QUE SERA SERA
SOLO
NOW I HAVE CHILDREN OF MY OWN THEY ASK THEIR MOTHER WHAT WILL I BE
WILL I BE HANDSOME WILL I BE RICH I TELL THEM TENDERLY
QUE SERA SERA WHATEVER WILL BE WILL BE
THE FUTURE'S NOT OURS TO SEE QUE SERA SERA
QUE SERA SERA WHATEVER WILL BE WILL BE
THE FUTURE'S NOT OURS TO SEE QUE SERA SERA
NOW I HAVE CHILDREN OF MY OWN THEY ASK THEIR MOTHER WHAT WILL I BE
