Election results

Council: 5-4 Dems

Hall - 4000 (D)
Ecke - 3600 (D)
Altieri - 3500 (D)
Slocum - 3400 (R)
Sima - 3300 (R)
Esty (D), Ruocco (R), DeCaprio (D), White (R)

Congratulations to the three newcomers: Laura DeCaprio, Jimmy Sima & Tim Slocum! Anyone notice... no Council incumbents lost? Although... the Dem domination of '05 was clearly gone this year with the two parties being on a much more even keel.

BOE: 4-3 Dems

Massey (D) & Sobol (R) were reelected. Dixon (R) returns to the BOE. Brittingham (R) was elected for the first time.

PZC: 6-3 Republicans (MRJ, by Leslie Hutchison)

Flynn-Harris (D), Maidelis (R), McPhee (R)

All five referenda passed.

Any thoughts on the election? I wanted to win a Council majority, but am not too surprised with the Council remaining 5-4 Dem. Nor am I surprised with the BOE results, but... I find the PZC quite interesting.

Why did Rich Levy (Dem incumbent) lose, while Patti Flynn Harris (Dem incumbent) win... with the most votes!? Rich and Patti both voted in favor of the ND zone text change.

It's also worth noting that Tim Slocum (PZC) and Jimmy Sima (BOE) were the most vocal opposition to the ND on their respective boards... and they both got elected to the Town Council.

Our much-maligned Town Clerk, Carolyn Soltis, had a resounding victory. Good job Carolyn!

Joe Bartoli (R) and Vin Lentini (D) were reelected to the Zoning Board of Appeals. Ken Wilson (R) was elected, while receiving the highest number of votes.

Compliments of Leslie Hutchison at the MRJ, here are links to the MRJ election night photos from both the Dem and GOP headquarters.

And as for the only vote totals that I remembered exactly (excluding absentee ballots)... I won 1197 to 666. Again... to the voters of the 4th District... thanks so much!

Tim White
Town Council, 4th District

The Democrats spent a lot of money to stay in nuetral. Moral;Political capital should be spent wisely.

Message to be taken away.

Democrats maintain a council majority for two consecutive terms. This is a big change for the town.

Observation 2:The turnout was woefully low...an unispired electorate.

Observation 3...this is a trend that hurts us all.

Who is at fault? Everyone. Elected officials over analyize everything and the electorate is thoroughly disengaged.

Please...public get more involved. Voting is a priveledge. You are the first to gripe at your leaders and most of you sit on your hands.

Congrats Tim. You kicked the Herald in their fat sagging jowels. The D's made a big mistake running with that very sorry endorsement. They slammed you and it cost their candidate hundreds of votes based on the totals amassed in the 4th by Dem's Hall, Ecke and even Kerrie Dunne. The Herald really flunked the smell test on that and sadly they made a descent person, candidate Fabiani, get ensnared in a rotten smear.

Next time we have an election. Call Sheldon Dill first. This man is Karnack. He said White, Ruocco, Slocum & Sima would be the winning Republicans. He was right again.

Congratulations to you Tim, Tim Slocum, Jimmy Sima and Tom Ruocco.

I recall an awful lot of cementheads spiking the ball on this site about how the Cheshire GOP was on its last legs and how the voters were going to throw us all out on our ear.

Well, the cementheads now have to deal with the fact despite the best political environment (more campaign money, alleged great record, Herald endorsements, toxic GOP president) they'll ever have, they actually lost ground, losing the PZC.

Is it possible Cheshire voters have a different definition of what is progress and "progressive" than the cementheads?

Congradulations to all the people who got involved in running for office. These positions are not paid and very time consuming.
I do not always agree with the results of issues but at least I will give everyone who donates their time to work in our twon goverment credit for trying to make the town a better place to live.

I ask all the elected members to get past your party line and do the right thing. Agree to disagree and keep it professional.

Good luck and keep up the good work

Congrats Tim on your victory! And by nearly two-to-one!!

State Rep. Vickie Nardello of Prospect had a lot of nerve butting into this Cheshire town election, and it backfired. Tim would have easily won re-election anyway, but her scathing negativity just added votes for Tim.

SHE'S the one who "doesn't listen to her constituents" (against 3-Strikes, for illegal alien handouts, for tax-and-spend, etc). She needs to worry about keeping her own job.

Some election trivia:

It looks like Tim White was effectively the top vote-getter in town. If you extrapilate Tim's 1200 votes times four districts, Tim received the equivalent of 4800 votes townwide, compared to Matt Hall's 4200.

And if Tim had run at-large, I bet he would have topped the at-large field, and possibly become the next mayor.

Congrats to all the winners. I'm especially glad the republicans hold the majority of seats on P & Z. If we're going to see development in the north end, I'm more comfortable with the republicans making the decisions.

What was the percentage of voter turnout? I know it was very low which is really disappointing. People need to start paying attention and getting out to vote at election time.

2001 of (approx) 4800 registered voters turned out in the 4th district... for a 42% turnout:

White: 1252
Fabiani: 706
blanks: 43

Townwide, turnout was 39%.

Congratulations to Carolyn Soltis! Glad she was re-elected. Apparently the voters saw through the Esty & Hall scheme of trying to discredit her.

And hooray! The P & Z is now under Republican control. Hopefully the residential part doesn't get approved - we don't need it. Don't even need the mall for that matter.

Tim would NEVER be the top vote getter in town, EVER. He is too crazy. Come-on, Vicki destroyed him last year in Cheshire. Tim would never play well in the entire town. And if he thinks that he would win the Mayor's seat after he fires Michael Malone and changes the charter he is really off his rocker.

Give it a rest, caveMAn.

It's unlikely you could ever win a one-on-one race in your own district. Your own neighbors know who's really "crazy".

The only reason Nardello beat Tim (barely) in Cheshire last year was because the Murphy-Johnson race pulled out more Democrats. Tuesday's 2-to-1 landslide for Tim is more indicative of his real widespread popularity.

When did Tim ever mention becoming mayor or firing the TM?? Someone else may have said that, but Tim didn't. Please give it a rest.

You are nuts, the more people that show up the lower his percentage, that shows popularity? OK.

The Democrats have gotten their people out in greater numbers than the Republicans despite falling turnout numbers. The proof is in the absentee votes.

Tim gets D's to vote for him and he probably loses a few R's along the way. The bottom line is that the folks that get relected usually have a record of service and better name recognition.

Voters usually vote for the person in local election and sometime that person is "known" by their name.

A further analysis of the numbers will reveal that the unaffilaited turnout was very low.

Now that the election is over, the Republicans should get Paul Bowman off of their nominating committee. The Bowmans have a great strategy, Paul the Republican and Matt the Democrat. They got both parties covered.

Both parties should stop accepting money, campaign headquarter space and meeting space from these local developers.

It was raining but that is a poor showing by Cheshire residents. The local election are the most important. Shame on people who don't vote. Millions of people in the world would do anything to have this right.
