Open forum: Debate

I'm going to refrain from offering much commentary here on the main post. But I still thought some of you may want to offer your comments on the "candidate's forum" tonight.

Personally, I tried to be as honest and forthright as I could be... while being respectful. But I absolutely wanted to draw distinctions between me and my opponent. As I said tonight, "Vickie has honorably served for 12 years. But it's time for a change."

State Representative candidate (R-89)

I like your proposal for a state law to limit property tax increases to 3% a year unless the local voters approve a higher increase. Have any other states done this?

Did I hear right that Nardello actually voted to give illegal aliens discounted college tuitions and then voted against increased funding for our towns? What is she thinking?!!

Yes indeed, handouts for illegal aliens (and for Hartford, New Haven, Bridgeport, etc), but only pennies for Prospect, Bethany, Cheshire.

As Nardello said last night, the legislature "has" to make the towns subsidize the big cities because "Cheshire is the 17th wealthiest community in the state."

How enlightened, how liberal she is. And the Hartford public schools are better off with all the extra money, I'm sure.

I think Vickie kind of kicked your ass last night. You did not really focus your thoughts and she had you playing backpedal on energy. And when they asked about negative campaigning you went on the attack and then said you don't like negative campaigning. She has done a good job representing us and let's face it-you don;t like pork and you won't bring it back to Cheshire. Stay on the Town Council and all will be fine.

anon 12:28... is that "17th wealthiest town" comment true? I missed it.

anon 7:20... In particular, what do you feel she has done to represent the 89th district well?

Vicki Nardello has done nothing for this town in the nearly 7 years I have been here. For that matter, the only time her face is ever seen here is about one week before election time. She is out of touch with residents, with voters and with American in general. Its time she goes. As for the previous posters comment that she "kicked your a..", that exactly the kind of response/view I would expect from someone who woudl support nardello or Lamont or Chris Murphy.

I think anon 7:20 was the stoner who invited Murphy into his house in the TV ad

Ms. Nardello said Cheshire is the 56th wealthiest community in the state. She said the legislature is contrained from giving any more money to the towns, and has to give more money to the cities, because of spending caps and a court order. Sounds like convenient buck-passing to me.

Interestingly, she failed to directly answer the question, if she supports or opposes spending caps. She only mumbled something about "addressing federal funding" issues. But we all know she's no friend of fiscal restraint. Isn't she an employee of the Hartford schools?

Tim...whats the news on AJ Waste...will the town be taking action against them for the bid rigging...

anon 2:09... there's nothing really happening right now at the town level.

Innocent until proven guilty.

Although, perhaps in the future something could happen at the town level.

My own guess... if it's all proven to be true, then it's pretty much statewide. And I'm sure that AG Blumenthal will take action.

The state ECS money has to be given out based on the relative wealth of each town because of a court order. If the legislature gave Cheshire, Bethany and Prospect more money than the poor cities, they would be sued and would lose. The only way for us, in the relatively richer suburbs, to get more money is if more money is given to everyone, which would be fiscally irresponsible.

ECS money is only part of the state budget. Off the top of my head... none of the other areas are covered by court rulings. At least not to the extent that ECS is.
