Radio vs. print

I was pretty put off this morning during the morning rush hour commute. There seemed to be a lot of talk about the "Croc Hunter," Steve Irwin dying. And while I feel terrible for him and his family, CT was simultaneously burying one American soldier from Milford and being informed of another fallen soldier from Enfield.

Steve Irwin's untimely death was sad, but the emphasis seemed wrong. It just didn't seem to be as of great a significance as two young men having given their lives for America.

Then I looked at the papers when I got to work. The Hartford Courant, New Haven Register and Bridgeport's Connecticut Post all had the soldiers as the prominent story. It was nice to see that the newspapers got it right.

The Courant has this list of Connecticut's fallen soldiers (Afghanistan & Iraq).

Very good point Tim. I think it shows that as a country we are used to service men dying. Which is sad.

You're right Tim - the emphasis is not always in the right place. Although I felt horrible for Steve Irwin and his family, after hearing of the CT soldiers deaths and having had two of my own sons come home safely from Iraq, my heart ached for their families. How lucky I am to have my boys home. How unfair it must seem to the families of the lost soldiers/Marines. Let's honor the fallen, and may we never forget them and the ultimate sacrafice they have made for all of us.

Sorry for Steve Irwin's two young children, but honestly, he brought it on himself with his wreckless behavior. He didn't really promote appreciation of wildlife or nature. He was more a thrill-seeker.

This is the same Steve Irwin who dangled his baby in front of an alligator awhile back. Well,if you play in the traffic, don't be surprised if you get hit by a car.

There are far more noble causes for which people risk their lives. God bless all our service members and all our public safety workers.
