Public Hearing 4/4

So we had the public hearing tonight. It went fairly smoothly. Many of my friends who like to keep an eye on spending spoke in favor of reducing spending. And while education took a bit of a tongue-lashing (is Jewelry & Enameling really worth the cost??), there were several other items repeatedly criticized without getting much of any public support:

1) Barn... boy are people upset about this. Frankly though, I can't see the Council spending money on this.
2) Turf... not mentioned much, but I also have serious doubts about this thing coming to fruition... at least this year.
3) Pool... mentioned frequently and with ire. I'm not sure what will happen with this. Although I have asked the Town Manager to provide me with different cost saving scenarios. The proposed $416,000 subsidy is still too high. I wonder if four members of the Council will agree with me on this? I tend to doubt it.

My main concern though continues to be the lack of transparency provided by the Board of Education. And if you're interested in my concerns, you may want to either attend the next Council meeting or watch it on TV (April 11, 7:30pm). I have a feeling that I'm going to be very, very frank in offering my opinion of our Board of Ed. As I said in an earlier post... the BOE is doing a disservice to our kids, to the taxpayers and to the Superintendent.

Yo, Channel 3 is reporting someone @CHS is planning a Columbine attack there on 6/6/06.

That parking fee really has them riled up

If a parking fee of $250 didn't rile them up, a $75 (proposed) fee for this year certainly won't. Nice try but I have been following you and Brickwall about this and Brick has backed up all his/her points with very valid arguments. You haven't other than you want more money for your son's education and that Cheshire kids are spoiled brats.
This is potentially a very serious concern. The student in question is reportedly the son of a staff member. Talk of this incident has been circulating the town for a few days. Many parents are quite concerned. Do you have any kids at CHS? If you did, you would agree with many of Brickwall's arguments and you wouldn't be so flip about this report.

Consdering two friends of mine are Cheshire cops I'm very concerned and am pleased that did not ignore this incident.

Sorry but when Brick claims giving something valuable away doesn't cost the taxpayers any money I'm reminded that sort of promise is made by politicians everyday, all the way to a $8 trillion national debt.

BTW, if you think special ed is expensive, try paying for lawyers if it isn't provided

How much is widening Rt 10 to accomodate all the student drivers going to cost, or should we just accept gridlock because it is convenient for some kids too cool to use public transportation?

Whatever. Perhaps if I were advocating for undocumented immigrants I'd be understood amidst today's virtual reality

Brickhead

Hope you enjoy the legal bills when the schools cut special ed to make up for the lost revenue and get sued

Let us all bow down to the convenience of adolescents.

well, again a point of agreement. Binding arbitration is a joke. it also runs at cross purposes to liberal social policy by accelerating teacher pay hikes in "wealthy" towns due to the "ability to pay" procedures, which apart from widening the existing class disparity causes a general salary spiral as other towns lose teachers...ala Steinbrenner hiring free agents causes pay pressure for the rest of MLB

It will not be fixed so long as we keep sending Tom Gaffey (D-CEA) to Hartford.

The parking fee and activity fee is just a ridiculous method to attempt to balance the school budget on parents. How does the BOE get away with charging to park in Bartlem Park, a public park for all?

We all want a good education system that helps to prepare the little children for life. here is a suggestion.

Choate School in Wallingford is an excellent school. The Board of Education should vote to adopt the curriculum for Dodd and the High School. offer the same sports and other extracurricular activities Choate has. Why would anyone refuse this option?

Why you ask? Not enough sport programs, no cars allowed, accountability & responsibility expected for actions, shall I go on?

I suspect some at CHS would rather expose students to Al-Jazeera than Rush Limbaugh

Good on ya brickwall.

The idea is to offer with limitiations a full curriculum that provides a rounded educational experience. CHS has become a small junior college with focus on sports and electives of little value. My point is CHS offers too much. We should demand the curriculum be toned down in what we could call the "fluff electives" and offer more math, science, foreign languages that will bring value to one's future work. We need to change our course offereings to reflect the change in the world society. Much to the disbelief of many we, the US, are no longer the determining cultural power of the world. Countries that speak Chinese, Spanish and Arabic are starting to have a greater influence on the world economy and social values. If our kids are to be successful in, exposure to the newer, potentially dominat cultures is a must.

Must everthing these days be multicultural?

I'm starting to think people reverted to apologizing for being Americans as soon as the smoke cleared at Ground Zero
