This is one of the oldest prayers in Christianity, dating back to the 4th Century.
The Easter Exultet, or Proclamation, is only sang once a year, at the Easter Vigil Mass, the most solemn of the year. It begins with the church in total darkness, and proceeds as fire is passed candle-to-candle, until the entire church is lightened. This symbolizes our passage from death to life.
Tim has linked a particulartly lovely version, chanted in duet. It's usually chanted solo.
Beautiful! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSuch sublime beauty!
