Inland Wetlands update 10/4

Here is the Herald's view on Tuesday's Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission meeting (by Josh Morgan). I didn't stay for the whole meeting on Tuesday, though what I heard was interesting... I'm just hoping to get to voice my opinion to the Inland Wetlands and PZC at some point... stop it or stack it... and leave the western portion undeveloped with a conservation easement in place.

And related to PZC... I'm hoping that this proposed development is self-sufficient with regard to electricity. According to CL&P, Cheshire is in the "southwest corner" of the state. And that's where we've got some serious transmission deficiencies... no need to exacerbate the problem.

  1. Hey the Democrats are killing the rep right now
they have a more active HQ and had a grand opening the other day the was well attended
the ran ads in the Herald and the rep had zilch
I heard that the democrats have raised 5 times them money the rep have
    they have many more volunteers
I think that the council will go 6-3 dems
    it is better that way

  2. No way the Dems may have all that but they have a weak slate. I think the Rep 5-4 with Tim W., Tom R., Steve C., Jimmy S. and Tim S. That will be a strong council, maybe with Tim as Chair? I can't wait!

  3. It is time for Hall and Ecke to go, they are weak and don't do anything.

  6. What I find amazing is that the Republicans offered nothing but the same old warmed over Schrumm/Osini politics during the last 2 years. Which is get nothing done or don't try new ideas.
Now their slate is full of followers and yes MEN. They should re-name it the CAVEMEN ticket.
Democrats at least have some new ideas that are interesting and may actually work.

  7. If you want the developers and other special interests to run Cheshire for their own benefit, vote for the Democrats.

Hall, Esty. Flynn-Harris and Marty Coburn pushed the W/S deal through. It's time for them to go. They sold out.

  8. Republicans voted in favor of the change of plan. They will vote for this project. Chamber has many Rep members who are in favor. All the rep members of the eco dev are for it.
Sounds like a rep slam dunk to me

  9. It will be different, you will see stong Republican leadership.

Tim for Chairman, the time has come!!!

  10. How the town council voted on the W/S development of 500,000 sq ft of retail and 160 rental units. And, it is possible for another 300 acres to be similarly develeped.

  11. the vote the council took was to have PZ look at possible changes to plan of conservation and development not on the project
    get the facts straight

  12. 5:11 Thanks for clarifying the council vote. Yes, it was a vote to have P&Z look at changes, but it CLEARLY tells me and all others that the dems on the council were in favor of the project overall. It tells me that they wanted a mall and a bunch of apartments/condos built in the north end. This is a project we don't need but the dems are pushing for it. It's going to cost us in the long run.

  13. Can you document that please. find me a statement by anyone on the council where they say they support the project
and by the way is there a final project?
    Can you document that too?
oh that is right you cannot
    sorry

  15. Visconti publicly showed her support for this project. She even suggested a trolley to bring people into the mall area.

  17. "the vote the council took was to have PZ look at possible changes to plan of conservation and development not on the project"

They voted on the project. W/S spent their entire time talking about the mall, the housing and how wonderful it would be. They voted on the idea of having the W/S Mall and the housing in the NE and gave a clear sign that they were for the W/S development.

Also, all the DEMs that voted for it never showed up at any P&Z meeting to voice their opinions to protect the town of Cheshire.

I'm sure the somewhat adversarial (and anonymous) poster of this comment will suggest that none of the following indicates support, but we all have a good deal more common sense than that. There has been no shortage of kind words from council members for the 'shoppes.' Here are some transcribed quotes from 1/23/07:

Altieri - "I guess I'm very excited about this project."

Ecke - "So, I think residential should definitely be considered because for the people that live, that want to live that lifestyle, it would be fantastic. So, good luck."

Esty - "I mean, we can opine on it, we can ask questions, but we have absolutely no control." (I mean no personal offense, but her speech on 1/23 was incredibly slick. I realize that the vote was only to pass this along to p&z, but the council had a chance to nip this or get in the way and most of them blew it. Esty's goal was to downplay the council's role and hurry this along. Her summary comments carefully avoided any project praise and boiled down to: the council is powerless, so let's just get this to P&Z.)

Visconti - "I guess I want you to talk a little bit more about the idea of the evolution of shopping centers, because my concern is more that residential really might make this more viable for the long term."

White - "I like the idea of this. I like everything that you have said here tonight." At least Tim did deliver a good follow-up question: “If this was not a net tax donor to the town, how much would you still support it?”

I recommend watching part three of the 1/23/07 hearing.

  19. and THAT is why meetings (and minutes) should be on the web.

The greater transparency will lead to greater accountability.

    CSH... great job. thank you.

  20. Are we keeping the Chairman up for the council meetings? He is so bored. Who runs the show? Who are the people they are running? Does a big bank roll and advertising in the Cheshire Herald an election win? I think not. Look at the candidates and listen to what they have to say. Last election a big promise was made and was not kept. Don't believe everything that they tell you. Wake up Cheshire and vote...

  21. the whole thing would have gone to PZ not matter what the council did
You guys have not a clue how this works
whether the council voted yes or no the developer would have the right to take it to PZ
    Get your facts straight

  22. "Does a big bank roll and advertising in the Cheshire Herald win an election? I think not."

The developers are spending big time one supporting their candidate. They know the Dems will give them everything that they want.

Get rid of the people that support the special interests.

  23. How can one feel that our environment will be protected by this development? How much is $37,000 go to buy us? Will this company simply look at the report by Milome and McBroom and say ok? It seems in this day and age that $37,000 doesn't buy much. This should be reviewed.

  24. We are always talking about the developers right. How about the Towns right? Give me a break....

    ReplyDelete
  25. "the whole thing would have gone to PZ not matter what the council did"

You are right. The council wanted to show their support that's why "YES" was the majority and all 5 Dems votes for it.

Give the Dems the credit they deserve, its their project.

160 apts, could be as high as 320 mall kids for our schools. They are selling the school system for profit.

  26. Who cares this election is boring. I don't think either party is any good. I will just stay home.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I dems only voted to allow P&Z to consider the project, right? Did three reps vote yes for the zone text change? They own it as much as anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Maybe if they would come out and say what they mean instead of double talk and BS we could see what they're up to.
It looks to me like the developers have the Democrats in their back pockets.
I am against residential development as part of this project. We don't need the load on the schools or town services. Somebody said " they are only two bedroom apartments each unit will have a maximum of two kids in each."
I'd like to know what's to stop a family from having three. When the wife gets pregnant with number three do they get the eviction notice or is it when the kid starts school?
I also think that whatever W/S says should be taken with a serious grain of salt.
What have they done in other towns?
The Council shouldn't be rubber stamping anything that has to do with this project and neither should P&Z, WPCA or Inland Wetlands.
Who is working for the town and who is working for the developers?

  30. Lou, ...It looks to me like the developers have the Democrats in their back pockets..., bold statement, now are you including Tim and the Republican's on the P&Z? Do you have any evidence? Do you think making statements like this is the right way to go about getting elected? I am not sure that I want someone elected who will attack people that you have to work with.

  31. Lou,

Do you seriously expect anyone to vote for you with all your bizarre comments?

It is hard to believe that the Republican Party in Cheshire chose you and turned down Cindy Kleist.
